#SB4 V1.3 help | enhance
5 messages in this thread
Hello Mike,
I've received the update to SB4 to V1.3 including the new manuals.
The first question is: as I now have 3 (three) serial numbers each for one
update, I now want to know which one to use as reference.
As well I have a suggestion for the next set of manuals: please include the
addendum manual for the DMLanguage inside one of the other two manuals – Using
DML I often have to look up the larger manual as well as the addendum (for
commandws after SET FORM BF).
I encountered a problem using ARexx within DML. For an application I had to
write a small ARexx programm checking DOS things which returns a value for
failure or success. Using the syntax: CALL "AREXX" RETURN "myrexxprog"
variable$ from withing DML and the statement IF whatever THEN EXIT 10; ELSE
EXIT 0 within the ARexx programm.
Whatever I do, I do not receive the return value in the variable$. At least
the ARexx programm gets called and runs. What did I make wrong?
Now the ARexx programm stores the value to a T:temp file and SB reads the file
and makes its decision.
Enhancement request: 1. I'd like to see a new structure in DML using "REPEAT
UNTIL". 1a. IF-GOTO Label would no longer be needed
2. Is it possible to include (PASCAL/AREXX LIKE) FUNCTIONS or PROCEDURES for
the
next release of SB? 2a.Modularisation would help making the whole thing
better readable and care about
return values/variable names
3. Could it be done that external DML programms may be called as subroutines
and
not only invoked by "CHAIN". 3a.So a once written routine in a larger
application which uses more than one DML
file would not have to be copied over all the other programs but could
easily be
used by lots of modules (reusability)
All of this would make life much easier for all SB programmers.
Thanx
-Mike

Mike,
the funny thing is that everything you asked for except for REPEAT…UNTIL is
implemented in the new Superbase 2.0 for Windows. BTW, you don't need
REPEAT…UNTIL, you can use WHILE WEND instead.
done%% = 0
WHILE NOT done%%
.
.
.
IF whatever… THEN done%% = -1 WEND

Neil,
I hope you don't mean that I now have to move over to SB4Windows 😉
The idea with the WHILE NOT done%%… WEND instead of using Label: .. if ..
goto Label is nice.
I'll use is next time I'll have to rewrite my programs 😉

PS: It still would be _great_ to see those enhancements in one of the next
releases of SB4Amiga.

Dear Mike,
I will look at your suggestions soon. There are some problems with the AREXX
interface. We are curently working on some of these problems. I'll get back to
you shortly.
Thanks,
Mike
Michael,
if your AREXX program returns a NUMERIC value your receive variable should
also be numeric, i.e. called 'variable%' instead of 'variable$'!
this means 'number'^ this means 'string'^
