Does anyone have any Arcnet cards for Amigas for sale?? I have a 2000 and a
4000 that I'm trying to connect to an existing Novell Arcnet network via Oxxi's
Amiga Client Software…

I was wondering about such an animal as well and mentioned it to my
boss. He hinted that you can hook an EtherNet card onto an ARCNet, but he
didn't get into any details.
You might want to explore that avenue. (And if you do, keep me
informed! 🙂

Here's the scoop: you can have a Novell server running both Arcnet and
Ethernet workstations, but again, you'll have to add not only the Ethernet
cards for the Amigas, but an Ethernet card in the server, as well. Actually,
adding the card to the server is not the problem; the problem is the absurdity
of having to pay 3-4 times more for an Amiga Ethernet card, simply because
there are only 3 or 4 companies making 'em. My whole reasoning for jumping
into this was the fact that it sounded so beautifully simple to be able to
connect my 2 Amigas to my existing Novell ARCnet with relatively little
expense. Oxxi was right when they said their client software was Arcnet
compatible, but I was hoping that a standard PC Arcnet card would work in one
of the PC/AT slots on the Amiga machines; not the case. The Oxxi software
only supports one Amiga Arcnet card, which WAS made by Commodore, and has been
totally discontinued. They support 3 Amiga Ethernet cards: ASDG, Commodore,
and Hydra. I haven't priced anything but the Commodore card, but that sucker
was $300 !

The price differential is "only" 2x, not 3-4x. I'm comparing SMC's Plus
Elite 16 (~$150) to the ASDG Lan Rover (~$300). Sure it's twice the price.
But it's less than 1/2 the market. LAN cards for Amigas arent' exactly big
sellers….

Minimal mail order shopping will reveal that PC-compatible Ethernet
cards can be had for $75.
And even a little bit extra shopping around will show you can get PC
Ethernet cards for $29. There's even a twisted pair version that's
available for $19!

I didn't realize that PC Ethernet stuff had gotten THAT cheap !
However, I'm sure you see my point about the $250-300 Ethernet cards
for the Amiga…
Those are introductory prices, by the way. (The real price is
$109…they're just flooding the market to get more acceptance).
I don't think that a price of $250 for an Amiga Ethernet card is that
unreasonable, considering the volume of cards that ship. I'd be surprised
if there were more than a total of 5000 of those cards shipped.

Eight or 16-bit ethernet cards?
I'm trying to compare like quantities. I picked SMC cards entirely because
I'm familiar with them. They are 90% software configurable, so are
somewhat comparable with Zorro-II cards…
