#Modeling a CD?
5 messages in this thread
Has anyone successfully animated a Compact Disc? I know it sounds
simple, but I am a perfectionist and want the radial rainbow colors
on the disc as it spins, not just a greyed disk spinning. I have
tried making the rainbo patterns as a texture map but the colors
always seem to get washed out and lack the inviting character of a
real CD. Reflection maps seem even more useless on the flat face of
the CD. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Andrew
Sorry, this is not an answer to you, but a question to the rest of the
group. Who did the CD-ROM on the R2 Siggraph Tape? It was wonderful
and I would think just what you are looking for. If you don't have
the tape, check it out!!!!
I just finished a project that needed a CD. I camera captured a CD
and applied it to a disk as a texture map. I created an opacity map
for the appropriate areas which are semi-transparent and I applied a
reflection map. The result was fabulous. It's one of the simplest
objects I've ever built, but very convincing. –Rick Rodriguez
Rick,
Thanks for the solution. Here is the one that I finnally found that worked
great.
Create a radial rainbo pattern like the ones seen on a CD in Animator then make
a flic of it rotating in the oposite direction you want the CD to spin. Then
make a spotlight that projects this pattern at your rotating CD. I excluded
all of the other objects in the scene except the CD in the rainbowed spotlight.
The end result was amazingly convinsing.

If the disc was modelled with a center vertex and the perimeter
connected with a radiatting "sunburst" of faces a (reflective) Face
Map material might just do the trick – Just a thought.
