No I'm currently not a member of the local SIGGRAPH, I am
interested.
I am a jack-of-all-trades type, I work full time for a large local company and
run a
small company of my own.

Orlando SIGGRAPH is one of the most active and exciting local chapters in the
country. We have the finest newsletter, great monthly presentations, a SIG Kids
chapter that is active in education, a yearly (coming in November) VideoGanza
(feature length presentation of the best in local animation talent – GREAT
stuff around here, very talented peoples), a Computer Graphics Expo with local
and national sales reps showing off their warez, and a yearly art show.
Our next meeting is Thursday, September 9th at 7:00pm. We meet at the Orange
County School System's Educational Leadership Center (fantastic facility) at
445 Amelia Street in downtown O-Town (across the street from the arena).
Meetings are $3.00 for non-members, free to students and members. (Tell them I
sent you as a guest and get in free once!)

This month's meeting is gonna be GREAT! Reps from Sun Island Graphics will be
demoing 3D Studio (of all things!)… HOPEFULLY with a sneak peak at r3! We
will also have a representative from RealSoft, the makers of a fantastic Amiga,
now Windows/Windows NT package called REAL3D. Features for this _$500_ package
include reverse kinematics, particle animation, effects of physics (put a
sphere on the table, tilt the table and the ball rolls down the incline!), etc,
etc! Too good to be true?! Could be. But the Amiga people love it… and I
cannot wait to see it.
Please come out and see us. If you have any questions, call me at 830-4384. A
couple of us normally go out for brews afterwards, you are welcome to tag
along.
This is the BEST time you could think of to become involved with Orlando
SIGGRAPH…. SIGGRAPH 94 Nationals are right here in dear old O-Town. I cannot
wait. Hope to here from you soon.

I hadn't thought of Orlando as a graphics hotbed before, but I see I was
mistaken! Where do most of your members work? Are they mostly
independent hobbyists? Does your group sell copies of the VideoGanza?
Inquiring South Florida minds want to know! <grin!>

There is a great deal of graphics activity in the Orlando area because of the
University of Central Florida (well, at least that's one reason). UCF has one
of the most highly regarded Computer Science ciriculums in the _country_, up
there with the bigwigs like Stanford, Car/Mellon, MIT, etc. UCF has the
Institute for Simulation and Training and an associated research park with 160+
companies doing simulation R&D. The Army and Navy simulation headquarters are
right there, too. LOTS of realtime graphics, and a great place to be right now.
Very little is happening in the job market as a whole… I'm living proof of
that… graduated in June of '92 and worked at Egghead Software (there are
worse places to work, of course <G>) for a year before I got my job with Martin
Marietta in Daytona Beach doing training exercise design for M1A1 simulators.
As I said, the job market as a whole is crap. Orlando is fortunate to have such
a resource, as the simulation industry is booming. Realtime graphics in general
is great stuff to know right now.
At any rate, I don't think that this really makes direct ties to our
membership. Most of them are using 3ds or Amigas at work supporting the needs
of local companies, or working for themselves. Some are in it for fun, (I guess
we all are, really) but SIGGRAPH is a professional organization by definition
and part of the ACM.
Do we sell copies of the VideoGanza? That I'll have to look into. Sell, I
doubt. Freely distribute, maybe. I'll let you know.
What do you do down south? and what part of the south are you in?

Martin Marietta, eh? Ever use any Modcomp or Harris systems at work?
I live down here in the Fort Lauderdale area.
