Just kidding! The Abekas, even the $16,000 model, is only a part of what is
needed to record animations! On top of this, in addition to an Exebyte tape
or TCP/IP protocol network, you _still_ need something to record it onto!
A basic Sony D-1 tape deck costs $115,000, or if you can settle for D-2,
these start around $55,000. It's probably not worth buying one if you will
only be recording BetaSP on it, and even those decks are $16,000 over and
above the price of the Abekas itself.

PMJI, but even with the LVR solution you still need something to record the
animation onto. When was the last time you gave a client an LVR disc as final
output. Not often, I'd guess <g>. 30 seconds capacity is a bit limiting,
though, for the Abekas.
If Quickpass materializes on the PC, I think people with that much money ($16k)
to spend may see the PVW2800 as the best solution for the money. I've done some
provisional calculations (some based on theory, and some on realworld Mac
Quickpass evidence) and over a decent long sequence of frames, the quickpass
solution with a very fast hardisk may only be 30-40% slower than the same
harddisk equipped LVR setup. Some of the vtr disadvantage will be negated by
use of quickpass, and obviously, the longer the layoff sequence the better, and
the faster the harddisk the better (that applies to the LVR and quickpass).

Wrong time to ask that question! Last Wednesday!! <g> We have a client
with their own LVR player unit who we have set-up with the bar-code system
for playback for their presentations.
But you are correct, you have to be careful who you give it to! It's always
nice to have a BetaCamSP deck around, but then, D-1 would be a trip, also!
