Philip,
PMJI. How many fonts does 4.1 have and what are they. Also, I have a
HP500C which has CG fonts in ROM. Is there any way PP4 could make use of
the existing fonts to speed up printing? And one last thing, I am working
on a unaccellerated, 5MB system with 2.1. It is slow but it is workable.
How does 4.1 compare in speed, would I HAVE TO get an accelerator, more
RAM?
Thanks, Andrew
Andrew,
Roy pointed out that I misread your questions and the list of features I gave
you were the differences from PPage 3.0 to 4.x.
PPage 4.1 is a maintenance upgrade to 4.0 and does not have any new features.
If you have 4.0 now then 4.1 will operate and have the same features and fonts
as 4.0 did.

Anyway…no, PPage can not use your internal printer fonts…basically
everything on the page is sent as a bitmapped image to ALL preference printers.
PPage 4.1 speed is the same…any unaccellerated machine will be slow (I know,
my 68000 A2000 is now 5 years old and frankly, OUTDATED!). Compared to even an
A1200 with 2 megs ram PPage flies.
My preference would be an 030, min 25 Mhz, and 8 megs ram to use with PPage (I
do 4-8 page newsletters, brochures with several graphics, menus with graphics
(as a side line–for fun)) and I know I could work well on this dream machine.

Philip,
I'd love to pop in an '030 (or '040) & several megs of 32 RAM but
unfortunately I have to wait awhile. So, currently I have version 2.1 of
PPage and I'd like to get the hotlink support with PD3. I also need more
fonts. How many fonts come with PP4? Also, do you think version 4 is
significantly slower than version 2 or about the same? Too bad the
printer ROM fonts can't be used, time to get a postscript. (BTW, what is
the cost of your CG font pack?)
BTW2, sorry about the confusion. My "jumping in" posting was somewhat
ambiguous.
BTW3, awhile ago I posted a general request for information on a personal
budgetting program to replace MoneyCounts that I have on my BB. It was
suggested to me that go for Phasar. Before I do I wanted to find out
about GDBudget. Is it still current. Is it any good?
Thanks, Andrew
Andrew –
If your still using PPage 2.1, I believe you could upgrade to version
3.1 still. You don't need to go all the way to version 4.1.
I could be wrong about this, though – ask Philip.
Anyway version 3.1 will give you many new features including the genies
(sp?) and the hot link to ProDraw 3. I am a current user of Pp3 and don't
plan on upgrading to Pp4 because of my machines limitation (and lack of
funds). I beleive Pp4 would really like to have 2megs of chip ram, which
I don't have. Gold Disk just release a maintance upgrade to Ppage 3.0
that fixes a few things (just like the maintance upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1)
And they issued the 3.1 upgrade for free. So I assume that if they are
still issueing upgrades to that version, then they probably will still
upgrade you from 2.1 to 3.1.

Roy,
Thanks. A while back I asked about 3.1 but I believe GD said they were not
supporting it as an upgrade option. I didn't push it because I figured
I'd go for 4.1 anyway, when the time comes. Ya, if 2 megs chip is
required for any useful work then I'll have to wait until I buy a new
computer (or a MegaChip). I should have gone for 3.0 because it was
released a couple months after I bought 2.1 but I figured if it ain't
broke then don't fix it.

Course – I could be wrong. And then again maybe if you ask nicely and
begg a little maybe they're give in and do the 3.1 upgrade.
The megachip is the way to go. I'm saving for one now and I'll
definatly have one in my old 2000 before I can afford a new computer.

Oh, yeah…I forgot to also mention that PPage 3.1 was only a bug fix upgrade
to PPage 3.0 users…there are no disk, manuals, packages etc. for a 3.x
version anymore.
Philip Laitar, Manager
Roy,
PPage 3.1 (3.anything) is not forsale.
To upgrade from PPage 2.x you do need to go through to 4.1 and it does require
an upgrade cost of $75 (US) (Upgrade from 2 to 3 was the same price).
Andre,
Desktop Budget is still at version 1.02 (about 2 years old) and the program has
never really been updated from it's original release.
However, it is still a handy BUDGETING tool, but, not necessarily a PERSONAL
FINANCIAL MANAGER.
It uses Icons, and you click and drag with the mouse to move monies, payments,
etc. around from account to account…this is not always what people want but I
like it.
It doesn't really handle stock portfolios, mortgages, etc.

Thanks Philip,
My financial situation isn't that complicated so DeskTop Budget may be
enough. Is there a demo available? What is the cost (any special offers
for owners of PP, PD & HyperBook?)
Andrew
Philip,
How much is the upgrade to registered 4.0 users? Is it free? How do I get
it? Can you just put my name in? Thanks in advance.

The only Amiga programs I know of that directly support printer ROM fonts
are Excellence! and, I believe, Wordsworth.

I also seem to recall that FinalCopyII is able to support printer fonts,
is that true? Do you know if it has been confirmed if Excellence! is no
more? (IE MSS is out of business???)
Thanks, Andrew
Philip –
I believe Eric was asking for the differences between PP4.0 and 4.1.
Are you say that this list is new to the 4.1 version?

Roy,
Your right…how red faced I am….
No, the feature list is from PPage 3.0 to 4.x.
PPage 4.1 is a maintenance (fix) update with no new features.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Phil –
That's ok – you got a good plug in for the 3.0 -> 4.1 upgrade 🙂

Philip,
Thank you for your answer but as Roy Pandle pointed it out, I have PPage
4.0. I suppose that a maintenance update is only the correction of some
problems? Are the upgrade conditions from PPAge 4.0. to 4.1. different
than from PPage 3.0.?
