I'm new to 3ds and thought I'd say hello. HELLO! Now for my first problem. I tried to boolean subtract lofted letters from a lofted box. I tessaletated (is this a word?) my stone box a number of times but nothing happened. I thought this would give me enough vertices. I guess not. Can anyone help? Thanks – Mark

Mark, >> I tried to boolean subtract lofted letters from a lofted box. I >> tessaletated (is this a word?) my stone box a number of times but >> nothing happened. I thought this would give me enough vertices. I >> guess not. Can anyone help? What do you mean by nothing happened? Tesselating your box a number of times should give you plenty of vertices. Try doing the subtraction from the User view that way you will be able to see the red line that forms as the boolean operation proceeds. Depending on your CPU and the number of vertices you have the operation could take upwards of an hour so be patient. Using bump mapping is sometimes a much more effecient way of doing engraving if that's what you're trying to do. Although you can't get real close with the camera. Hope this helps some… Dave Mennenoh

Mark, I think it's much better (cleaner and less vertices) to loft the text and box together. This will leave holes in the block which you could then cover with another simple boxed object. I rarely use booleans because advanced planning can usually provide a better solution using simple shaper and lofter techniques.

If you haven't already, try lofting the box with higher # of SHAPES steps, and higher # of PATHS steps before you tessellate, and turn OPTIMIZE off. Hope this helps, John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
