#Buying Previously Owned
6 messages in this thread
Can anyone tell me what Autodesk's rules are concerning purchasing
previously owned copies of 3Dstudio v3.0? If I do purchase a copy of 3DS, can I
upgrade to the new version of Release 4.0?
Also, once 3DS is owned can I purchase additional dongles (I think that's
what they're called) so I can run 3DS on more than one machine, or do I have to
purchase additional copies of 3DS?

Purchasing a retail version (vs. Student) of 3DS is legal, provided you
register the software. It's upgradeable.
Additional dongles are $3000 each. I don't think you want to do that! You
must purchase additional dongles to run on more than one machine
simultaneously. It's not illegal to install 3DS on more than one machine and
have them render as networked slaves while you continue work on your dongled
machine. You may also have 3DS installed on more than one machine, and
(carefully!) carry the lock from one machine to the other when you use 3DS.
You must not run 2 copies simultaneously (except network rendering).
Nik,
Here's a question for you: I have a P590 and a 486/66, but they are not
networked. If the dongle is on the P5-90, can I render on the 486? ie: does
there have to be a network involved, or can I run the renderer standalone?
(Since the two machines are half a mile apart, I can't easily network them.)

Machines that are not networked can both run 3DS. The one with the dongle will
be the one you use to create the works. The other machine can use batch line
rendering (start 3DS with appropriate file names, etc.) all from the command
line. It will start up in a dedicated mode that permits you to render, but
does not allow you to edit. You'll just have to find a way to get your PRJ or
3DS files from the dongle machine to the rendering machine.
Thanks, Nik! I'll probably move the files over with QIC-80(s!).

So I can purchase an older version of 3DS that has been purchased through
the retail chain? What is the difference between the retail version and a
student version that makes it not legal to purchase the student version?
