1. As you've heard, some SCSI controller simply don't work well with the
A4000.
2. Some boards seem to have incompatibilities with other boards, even when
they work fine alone.
3. Some boards are slot-sensitive: try putting the IVS in a different
slot.
4. The GVP 4008 (available for about $160 mailorder) appears to be a
SCSI-1 board INTENDED for use in the 4000, and might work better than
older cards.
5. If you decide to go an EXPENSIVE route and buy a SCSI-2 FAST
controller, I would suggest getting a board like the Warp Engine, that
gives you a SCSI-2 FAST controller, and accepts your existing memory, but
utilises it with increased speed (although you might want to try to trade
up to 60- or 70-nanosecond RAM), and will accept either the 4000's 25mHz
040 chip, or their own 40mHz chip. (In other words, an accelerator (at
least a little, and maybe a lot, depending on your budget), PLUS the
SCSI-2 FAST controller, and faster ustilsation of RAM, and it will accept
up to 128 megs of RAM eventually.

I do seem to have things running "relatively" well now. I still get
crashes, but not nearly as often and the machine takes a lot of time off
during heavy disk I/O. Just things I was not used to before on the
A2000/030.

I tried it with and without my only other card (a multiport card).

Tried this, too.

Perhaps in the future. I am reluctant to go much further right now
considering the state of the computer and the state of the Amiga in
general.
