3D-Studio Accelerators

i am now shopping for a PCI bus PC. do you knwo if 3D-Studio works OK with
a PCI bus ?
thanks
It seems that there is no problem with the PCI bus– just with some PCI
graphics boards and 3ds inline drivers. You should check your options if you
are going to use PCI video. There us no problem with PCI or any other bus and
3ds, just with what you put in that slots 🙂

Thank you for you input on the PCI/Autodesk topic. You suggested that
I check my options. Well, I called Matrox today and they informed me
that they are working on a Vibrant Inline driver for their MGA-II
cards, specifically the PCI version.
Yes, that's what I know about it. So, are you going PCI or you will
wait a few months? We have bought DEC XLs (one for 3ds, one for
printing) with PCI buses. We have bought them _without_ video
because we want to add a Matrox MGA-2 PCI. They will come on
February so I hope that Matrox will have the inline drivers ready in
20 days 🙂
I actually spoke to Matrox a few days ago and they said they are
shipping their MGA-II's (PCI version included), but the Vibrant
drivers won't be ready until early February, as Vibrant is
writing/testing them, not Autodesk.
As a matter of fact, I'm vascilating between a Pentium/PCI/ATI and a
486/PCI/MATROX. Both of these work out to be roughly the same price.
Any suggestions as far as 3D Studio goes?
Those are great news. I will wait until early Frebuary. I most probably will go
with the MGA2.
Regarding ATI… well, I won't get another ATI even if you pay for it <g>

do you know anything about the diamond viper pci card?
i have just ordered a micron p60 pci computer which ships with the viper pci.
do you know if there is going to be a problem with using this card and viberent
setup on r3.
drop me a line if you dont mind
thanks
ara
Currently the Viper PCI is not supported by the inline Vibrant drivers in 3DS
R3, but vibrant will have an update for all PCI cards in two weeks or so.
hope it's fast enough,
John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
On the release of those PCI drivers, do you know if the ATI Ultra Pro XLR will
be supported? If so, might you be so kind as give me a number where I could get
them?
Dave Hunter
I was under the impression that the ATI pci card was working with current
Vibrant in-line drivers. John K. Jordan has his ATI pci running, perhaps he
can answer this for you best.
John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Thank you, I will contact John and find out.
Dave Hunter
Dave, the PCI ATI card that came with my PCI machine is was advertised as an
ATI Ultra XLR but is referred to in the manual as an ATI AX0. It seems to work
well with the built-in Vibrant drivers in 3DS in all modes. I chose ATI Ultra
XLR in the Vibrant configuration when setting up 3DS.
JKJ
You don't know how glad I am to hear that (you having an ATI XLR). About 12
hours ago I ordered/purchased a PCI Pentium system with an ATI XLR, knowing
next to nothing about the XLR other than what the salesman had told me, and
talked me in to. I had done a lot of research as to what video card to buy, and
yet I hadn't heard of this XLR version.
I feel MUCH better now……….
Dave Hunter
jhon:
thanks for the reply. i will contact viberant for sure.
also you say "i hope it is fast enough" do you mean the card or the driver?? do
you know anything about this card that not good? or was that ment in a positive
way.
let me know
thanks a bunch

Just a note – I heard at the Pacific Rim show here in Vancouver, that Diamond
is making special drivers for the PCI version for use in R3.
Dave Hunter
I really can't imagine that Diamond could write as good drivers as Vibrant.
I've never used a card with better home written ADI drivers than the in-line
Vibrant version. When it comes out I would recommend the Vibrant, although a
comparison would be very interesting.

do you think this drivers are going to be as good as the viberant one?
also what about liquid speed. i am using it now. i dont believe that liquid
speed will work with any non viberant driver or am i wrong?
please let me know if you have any additional info.
also do you think viper pci is a good choise!?
thanks
ara
>> i dont believe that liquid speed will work with any non viberant driver or
am i wrong?
I am currently doing an independent study of LS for Vibrant. Your comment is
interesting and although Vibrant says it will work with other drivers besides
their own, I will include this as part of my evaluation to determine just how
well. Thanks for the idea.
don: thanks for the reply. please let me know what you find out. i
am realy interested. thanks ara
Ara,
Liquid Speed will work with the inline drivers, VESA, and VGA for
sure. In the case of the later (VESA and VGA) it is not as
effective. We worked very closely with the developers of the inline
drivers (us <g>) and were able to make some direct calls from Liquid
Speed giving it better performance that with VESA or VGA.
We are doing a study of RCPADI drivers with Liquid Speed. We have
found one RCPADI driver (European) that clearly does NOT work with
LS.
Best Regards,
Brian
brian: thanks for the reply i believe that you work with/for
vibrant?! if you do can you tell me if a viper pci driver is going to
be availible from you guys? if so when can i expect to get an
upgrade so that i can use r3 and the viper pci. if you can please
drop me a note. thanks in advance ara
Ara,
I don't have experience with the Viper. However, it seems that there is a
problem using a PCI setup and Vibrant drivers. I think that Gus Grubba has a
Viper in his new DEC XL and he is having problems with it. Someother people
also points in the same direction. However, they are working (day and night, I
suppose 🙂 on new drivers.

i have contacted viberant, and they told me that a viper pci driver is on its
way soon (few weeks was what i was told). the proble is that "few" is a
relitive term and what it indicates is not very clear.
but i believe with all the pci stuff going around, they wont delay it too much.
take care
ara
(ara vs ana, humm.. , all you have to do is extend the tail of the r and we got
the other.cool)
I hope the MGA2 works out for you, looks like a good card. As for the ATI, it
looks okay to me….. will let you know if I have problems with it though…
Dave Hunter
Dave,
I just have a bad experience with ATI drivers, specially in Windows. Anyway, it
seems that both of us will find the nirvanna 🙂
ana /krazy images
Ana
A 'bad experience' with ATI drivers? Would it be possible for you to elaborate
on this? (And if these would serious problems, did you find solutions/updates?)
And, just to let you know, I recently purchased/ordered a PCI Pentium system
with an ATI XLR graphics card and a ViewSonic 17G. (Just in case your were
dieing to know…..I finally bit the bullet and dished out the dough for a
Pentium.)
Dave Hunter
We got an ATI Mach32 time ago (just whent they where _hot_ stuff in the
market). The drivers were buggy and they don't support the 24bits modes of the
boards within Windows. We downloaded several new versions since the first
drivers and it seems that the last ones are working (moreless, they make the
computer to hangup _sometimes_ 🙂 We are not longer using the board (it has
been here for just a few weeks, then go as a present for one of Jesus'
brothers) but we know that it is working right now. The AVI drivers are nice,
specially if you are planning to play with multimedia stuff.
ana /krazy images
Ana;
Hopefully, ATI will ship their latest drivers with the ATI XLR PCI we ordered.
I'm not looking forward to seeking out strange, new drivers. Thank you sharing
your 'ATI' history. The PCI system arrives this coming weekend (the 30th), so
I'll let you know how it goes driver wise.
Dave Hunter
I, conversely, have had virtually no problems with ATI drivers, and apparently,
the ATI AXO (also known as XLR) is the only known PCI board to work with the
current r3 inline drivers!
Dave
David;
Well, I have to hand it to you – that's the best news I've heard on
this board. Thank you! That is a trememdous confidence builder. The
only PCI board that works with the current vibrant drivers hm? That
definately sounds encouraging – I just hope running it on a Pentium
makes no difference….
Dave,
You know, it's really nice when a client ventures away from your hardware for a
brief moment, and then BEATS YOU UP ON ASOFT WITH IT! <G,D&R>
