CALC.ZIP is back…
A few weeks ago I upload a free IPAS Plug-In to the forum. I discovered a
problem with it, so I had to pull it from the libs. I have corrected and
tested things and have upload the file again. If you missed the blurb the
first time, here it is again…

A freeware IPAS Plug-In to allow users to keyframe objects and selection sets
of objects using accurate AutoCAD type coordinate entry.
Over the past few months I have worked on several forensic and architectural
animations. I really wished I some additional keyframing tools, so using the
IPAS3 toolkit I added these features:
– A method to use AutoCAD type coordinate entry (Rectangular, Polar,
Cylindrical, and Spherical coordinates).
– A method to accurately keyframe distances in feet and inches.
– A method to Scale and Rotate objects in _decimal_ amounts.
– A method to keyframe multiple objects at once (Selection Sets).
– A simple method to read keyframe information from an ASCII file (so experts
with whom I've worked could give me the positions directly and I could just
read them in).
The program is set up around a Reverse Polish Notation Calculator (ala
Hewlett-Packard). It is designed in this way to allow you to perform
arithmetic on keyframe parameters, and to retrieve key information from objects
and apply that information to other objects. Parameters for keyframe functions
are placed on the calculator stack. This stack supports the following data
types:
– Real Numbers (Decimal or Feet and Inches).
– Points or Displacements (Width, Depth, Height).
– Scale Factors (Width, Depth, Height).
– Rotation Angles (Width, Depth, Height).
– Mesh and Dummy Objects.
– Selection Sets of Mesh and Dummy Objects.
– RGB Color Quantities (For future use).
– Transformation Matrices (For future use).
The program supports the following coordinate formats for Position keys:
Rectangular: Width, Depth, Height
0,0,5.1'
2'3",4'3-1/2",5"
Polar: Distance<Angle in Plan
4'6"<45.6
5.125'<270.1
Cylindrical: Distance<Angle in Plan, Height
4'<45,8'
5'6-1/2"<0,6.2"
Spherical: Distance<Angle in Plan<Angle Up from Plan
4'<45<30.5
Here is the list of available Calculator Functions:
– Create Keyframes: Create Position Key, Create Rotation Key, Create Scale Key,
Read Script File.
– Retrieve Keyframes: Get Position Key, Get Scale Key, Get Pivot Point.
– Retrieve Object Info: Object To Point, Get Object Size.
-Object Selection: Choose Objects, Tag Selection Set, Pick Object, Pick
Selection Set.
– Arithmetic: +, -, *, /, ^, %, %-Change, Sin, Cos, Tan, Arc Sin, Arc Cos, Arc
Tan, Square Root, Absolute Value, Change Sign, Integer Portion, Fractional
Portion, Round To Disp Prec.
– Stack Manipulation: Enter, Clear Level 1, Clear Stack, Last Stack,
Stack To Point, Point To Stack, Swap 1 And 2, Swap 1 And 3, Swap 1 And 4, Swap
2 And 3, Swap 2 And 4.
– Display Control: Hide Dialog, View Level 1, Display As Decimal, Display As
Ftin, Absolute Toggle, Format Toggle.
– Function Execution: Function List, Repeat Last Func.
– Strokes: Teach Stroke, View Strokes, Delete Stroke.
– Color Manipulator (for future use): Enter Color, Edit Color.
– Matrix Operations (for future use): Enter Matrix, Matrix Init, Get Object
Xform.
There is online help for every button in the dialog and every command in the
program. The keyboard is programmable so you can assign frequently used
commands to keys for quick execution. There is also an interesting user
interface technique called 'Strokes' which allows you to sketch a shape with
the mouse and assign a program command to execute each time this shape is
drawn.
The program is free. It is in the IPAS Usage library and is called CALC.ZIP.
It contains a short tutorial to help you get started (There is an ASCII version
and a MS-Word version. If you can print Word documents, I recommend you print
that one as it is _much_ easier to read).

I was working at cyberdreams as art dircetor we made Cyberace for the PC and
the company did Darkseed for pc and the mac. I have moved to Interplay
productions and we are working on Cyberhood and many more. I use this acc

Hey, Buddy, you are MOST welcome.
I just got a call from a close friend/ACAD/3DS user who DL'ed your routine last
night and it SAVED his animation! He was having trouble with jitter in an
ACAD-imported path and your routine fixed him up nicely. He sends warm thanks.
Regarding DanS: Yup, he's gotta be one of the nicest poeple I've ever had the
pleasure of talking to. You get this great feeling that he knows EXACTLY what
you are talking about immediately. Kinda like when I was little and a very
intelligent and kind Aunt would listen carefully to everything I said. Gotta
knock this off — I'm gettin' all mushy.<g>
It *was* great meeting you at Siggraph, Mark. I hope we can talk in person

Its freeware. I could upload a few pieces of the source (the entire
thing is about 9700 lines). Is there anything you would be
interested in Cing?

PS: Thanks again for the two free passes to Siggraph. All the money I
saved on them went right to the Orlando cab drivers <g>.
You did the lights IPAS, too? The source code is very instructive. I'm sure
many people would love to see the calculator code.
I'm glad we were able to distribute the free passes that we had… I had an
extra theater ticket, too, but gave it away to a passer-by who needed one.

Thanks for your generousity. I really HAVE been meaning to "register" the
LIGHT util IPAS — it's great too. I will get a check sent off. I played with
the previous version of CALC — did the tutorial. A real handy piece of code.

I'm glad you got the newer version. You'll see a few improvments I made. One
is you can operate on selection sets while still being propmted for all the
stack parameters. The Script file reading is better also.
Re lighting pxp: If you do register the lighting utilities I'll e-mail you a
revised version. It has a new feature for removing new objects from existing
light exclusion lists. In other words, when you have a bunch of lights in the
scene which illuminate specific objects, and then you add new objects to the
scene, these new object are affected by _all_ the lights. This is usually not
what you want! Currently you have to go from light to light and remove the new
objects. Using this new version, you can tag a group of objects to add to the
exclusion list of any lights you select.

devoted to a display of the sleeping bags the programmers and animators used on
their major projects…

Hi Gary,
I enjoyed your presentations at Siggraph. I was quite suprised and
pleased about the quick release of r4. Very exciting. Now I really
have to hustle to try out all your great IPAS routines ;-). My
favorite so far is TEMPO. I was practically crying when I did the
tutorials it is so amazing! Displace is truly brilliant as well.
These programs really open up the creative possibilities with 3ds.
The Silicon Garden is very cool also. I got the book you mentioned
in the docs – 'The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants'. Very interesting
stuff. I'm glad I can just create the images and not write the code
<g>. Finally, I can hardly wait for IPAS4 🙂
