Has anyone seen the latest ad in Amigaworld for the 486DX Emplant emulation?
Those screen snapshots of the AmiBIOS setup screens are very iimpressive. If
Jim Drew manages to deliver a decent product that will allow a user to run the
gamma of Intel based OS out there (OS/2, Unix, NT, and Chicago), hopefully it
will finally shut up all those naysayers that kept insisting that the IBM
emulation was a hoax. Also, with this product out, the Amiga will be the only
computer capable of running all of the most popular OSes. Shouldn't this be
reason enough to bombard some of the CIS addresses that handle editor response
to some of the major computer periodicals. I know INFOWOLD keeps one here, and
so does PC-Week. Even if C=> is dead, they should at least acknowledge this
little feat of software engineering. Kudos to Jim & Joe, anxiously awaiting the

Hi, could you tell me which issue you are refferring to? I'm looking at the
August issue, but it's the same ol' (but impressive) Mac emulation.

It's in the September issue. Just as a footnote, check out the last page, THE
LAST WORD section, where the first letter is from a user complaining/noting
that every issue of AmigaWorld had about 96 pages and since the C=> fiasco, the
number of pages has dropped to only 80 pages. Funny thing, :0, this letter is
printed on the last page of the September issue,… on page 64. Sign of things

Just Multitasking Operating Systems AmigaDos & OS/2.
From what I understand there is a bridgeboard card made by Golden Gate that
will allow the Emplant to use PC cards/hardware. Now, we are not talking about
the 486SX/DX bridgeboard but merely a device that allows the use of PC hardware
in conjunction with your Emplant board,… but I may be mistaken… Catya,
I wonder if an old 2088 board would also allow it to use pc cards?
I'm not aware that it does work, but if so,… talk about a scramble to find
these things… Even so, given the way the industry is headed, it won't matter
much if you start seeing more and more cards conform to the PCI bus, with
Chicago supporting plug and play and everything. As I understand it, the Amiga
bus cannot handle these new designs. Catya,

As far as I know, you can run all the OSs now, with a 486 BB or Golden
Gate…though I'm looking forward to the 486 Emplant too.

Sorry, I forgot completely about the 486DX BB from Golden Gate. It is my
belief, that someone/somebody should rethink their strategy as far as this
product is concerned. Let's face it, if you have a need to run Intel based
software and have a specific desire to use PC hardware/cards also, then yes,
you should go for the 486BB solution. If on the other hand, you only need to
run software, then the expense associated with a 486BB in contrast to that of
acquiring the Emplant, severly handicaps the 486BB option. I can't why anyone
would want to spend over $1300.00 for a 486BB with 8meg RAM (and their SVGA
monitor switcher) when you can buy the real thing for much less. The Emplant
OTOH does have the capacity to keep growing, who knows, maybe someday we'll see
a ColecoVision emulator,… 😉
Certainly, the Emplant promises to be the bargain…when it comes out!

As Vortex (the manufacturers of GoldenGate) told me on their hotline, they
have succesfully tested OS/2 and SCO UNIX and Interactive UNIX.
However, the emulation of peripherals does not work: you ought to have a
separate mouse, a separate keyboard, a separate floppy!

No, but it's a good sign. Jim Drew is a bit quiet at the moment and a lot of
speculations is going on. His 486-emulation seems to have drawn the attention
of some big companies like apple. So we'll have too see what his ideas for the
Amiga will be. Apple represents a possible much larger market for him.
On the subject of "we'll just have to wait and see", i've been a bit
disapointed lately as i haven't seen anything concrete for a long while about
where thing are heading for. Sad but true, these are no possitive signs.
