I am thinking about making a switch to NT and need to know when I could hope to see a NT version of ACAD and 3d Studio? Thanks :') Kirk

Sorry, Autodesk does not talk about future releases of software. -Brian

> when I could hope to see a NT version of ACAD and 3d Studio? Why wait for NT? The current version of OS/2 works with 3DS now. I get to use 3DSR3 on my OS/2 system, and can switch away and run 32-bit programs concurrently. — Doug Azzarito

Can you send me more info on how you do that? I tried OS/2 for a month or so and was unimpressed (v2.1). I was under the impression that it would not run (along with AutoCAD – two of my critical apps) under OS/2 with out a lot of vodoo OS/2 tricks. I am open to OS/2 but it seems that AutoDesk isn't. I would like to see someone other than Mircosoft win once in a while but I must say that NT installed (off the CD ROM) the first time, with no bugs. That is more than I can say for OS/2. I would love to use OS/2 but if AutoDesk is not going to FULLY support it I can't justify making that change. Thanks :') Very seriously Kirk

There aren't many "secret tricks" to running 3DS under OS/2. The only "problem" is when running 2 copies of 3DS (one for slave rendering), the background copy still wants to put up a graphics screen (the progess 'gas gauge'). If the graphics mode being used for the background isn't compatible with the foreground, 3DS is suspended. The way around it is to build a 3DS.SET file with a very generic driver (I've been told the new vibrant drivers even have a NULL driver that uses no graphics calls). Once you have a 3DS.SET that runs in the background, you can start another 3DS in the foreground (with the "real" graphics driver), and send render commands to the slave. > I am open to OS/2 but it seems that AutoDesk isn't. Strange, isn't it? They produce a program selling for thousands of dollars, and when an OS comes out that makes their program more usable, they ignore it. Heck, if I'm buying a $3000 program, and am told that a $100 OS will make it better, I won't complain. AutoDesk has made changes to their AutoCAD to make it run under OS/2. The Yost Group didn't need to make changes, but they could be looking at ways to improve 3DS by taking advantage of OS/2. The final decision should be based on what makes 3DS run better? — Doug Azzarito

What display modes can you use while doing this? 24 bit? Regards, Paul

> What display modes can you use while doing this? 24 bit? 3DS running in the foreground can do whatever it wants to the display. When it's in the background, it has to be "well behaved." That's why I use a second copy of 3DS, set to generic VGA to do renderings (since there's nothing to see on that one anyway). I then send slave render commands to the background 3DS, and go right back to work. — Doug Azzarito
