We are thinking about buying a Motion JPEG recording system such as Matrox MAX.
Does anyone have any comments on the pros and cons of the systems on the
market. The three we are looking at are:
Matrox MAX
Targa 2000
DPS PAR
We do however need PAL output not NTSC.
Any comments would be appreciated.

I've never heard of this one. What is it, what is the quality like, how much
does it cost?

They have an ad on page 2 of the July AV-Video magazine. Haven't seen it
recently, but it should be on a quality level and price point in the range of
the others you were investigating.

I've now discovered that the MAX isn't available in the UK yet but the T2000 is
– and its cheaper. I've not heard of the Bandit though.
Why do you think the MAX is better than the T2000 ?
Where can I find out more about the Bandit ?

The main difference between the MAX and the Targa 2000 is in file handling
(=throuput) and pixel aspect. The Targa2000 is really a multimedia tool, and
the MAX a digital video device. Targa2000 gets roughly 2.5 (maybe a bit more)
per second throughput, and the MAX gets 4.5 megs per second on my system.
Also, Targa2000 is a square pixel device and the Illuminator PRO uses the 1.333
pixel ratio like PAL and NTSC televisions do. I believe a European (PAL) MAX
is in the works, and should be well worth waiting for. Next rev of max
software will include dual disk array for 8-9 megs per second throughput (3:1
compression = visually lossles!), CMX edit list read-write, cross
fades/dissolves, improved EDL scrubbing, 4 track audio support for Turtle Beach
and other high end cards, and other cools stuff. I'm not sure what the
Targa2000 offers in the way of software support, but I think it works with
Premier, which is pretty nice. Current version of windows premier kind of
sucks, but I hear the next rev should be impressive like on the MAC.

Or the VM DPR, the most expensive of the bunch but it will do 3:1 compression
ratio and full NLE with audio, however its still vaporware. Release date is
Sept. 94. at least until Sept comes and goes. <BG>
