#PAR/VCRS
22 messages in this thread
I have recently purchased a PAR board and would like to here some pros and cons
on using Hi-8 or S-VHS to output to (I can't afford Beta SP) and what Brands
people like or don't like. My price range max's out at $2000.00. Any comments
would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Craig.
Craig:
I'd just go to your nearest consumer electronics store and get a goos SVHS
deck. Unless you ever want to single frame record or edit with it, there's
really no reason to spend much money. The advantage of an SVHS deck is that it
can also record and play regular VHS, saving you some money in the process!

Greg:
Thanks for your input. Although I've been checking around and it's amazing the
number of stores that don't carry the SVHS Decks anymore.
Craig
Craig:
Really? They are pretty popular around here (Southern California).

Greg:
I did find a JVC for about $700.00 but it's got all the consumer bells and
whistles ( VCR-PLUS, etc ). I hate paying for the gimmic stuff although I've
always had good luck with JVC products.

Yeah, it would seem that SVHS is going the way of (consumer) Beta. It was a
nice idea, good quality, but costly and NO support in the video rental market.
Plus, I don't think most consumers could tell the difference between SVHS and
regular. Heck, they like the image their single CCD Video camera produces!
(sure beats that old Super 8, though)
Now if SVHS had only been a $50.oo more option (instead of twice the price of a
standard) and Blockbuster had a SVHS section, then things might have been
different.

Another reason SVHS has not done well is that the VCR manufacturers seem to
have very carefully (and successfully) concealed the fact that SVHS machines
will play and record standard VHS tapes just fine.
I have no idea why this fact has not been publicized but almost no one who
doesn't own a SVHS vcr is aware of this. It is never mentioned in any
advertisement for SVHS equipment.
Very strange.

Jamie:
So, do you think it would still be worth purchasing a SHVS Deck – especially
over a Hi-8 deck ?
Craig Neubauer
The main reason I like S-VHS over Hi-8 is that it holds up better to
generational loss, and you can play VHS rental videos on it <g>.

Sounds like I should hunt down a good consumer SVHS Deck. There are very few
places in my area that sell them, especially without the consumer bells and
whistles on them. Any recommendations on Makes and Models ?
Thanks
Craig Neubauer
Craig,
I'm not an expert on the best VCR models but I've also been asking around about
them and I've heard the following recommendations:
1. Panasonic AG-1970 – about $1,200
2. Sony SLV-1000
3. Mitsubishi U69 – about $650
4. JVC 6900
Good luck,
Alec Jason
Alec:
Thanks for the list. I'll start looking to see if anyone in my area carries
any of these. I wonder if these have any unecessary gimmics to add to the
price? The only added features I want is for it to make coffee and walk my dog
<BG>. Oh yeah… I don't have a dog. Maybe a render me up one.
Craig Neubauer
Craig,
Videomaker magazine just rated the Sony SLV-R1000 the best SVHS editing deck on
the market. I think it lists for about $1000 although your mileage may vary.
This little unit features HI-FI stereo, Control-L protocol, VCR+, automatic
head cleaner, remote, and AC power cord (handy item).
I'd call B&H Photo-Video at 800-947-9901.

Timothy:
Thanks, I'll check it out.
Craig
I have the JVC H-RS 4900U, and it works great. No real bells and whistles on
this one, other than some programming and stuff like that.
John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
John:
What's an average price for that ?
Craig
I paid under $600, but it was on sale (returned item). I think it hovers
around $700, though
John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
John:
Thanks
Craig
I bought a JVC consumer level S-VHS deck that allows random assembly editing,
audio dubbing, and has jog-shuttle controls. The image quality rivals my $3000
Sony industrial S-VHS deck, and it only cost @ $700.
John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Any dropped frames? Tape banding? Noise? How many hours a week do you put on
it?
I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to… is this the consumer grade JVC
s-vhs?
I pretty much only use it to make dubs and to watch rented movies. For MAX
recording I use either Beta SP or a Sony SVO-9600 Pro.

John:
I like JVC myself – I have two of their Monitors/TVs and a good standard VHS
which I like. Thanks for your comments.
