#DOS 6.2 slows AniP Load
12 messages in this thread
Hi all. Not sure if I should have posted this in the Ani Pro section, but here
goes.
I am running two networked 486-66 clones, each with 32 MB RAM and have never
had problems with a particularly slow load of AniPro even with a 20 MB
animation in the temp file. Ever since running the "stepup" from DOS 6.0 to
DOS 6.2, and running "memmaker", it has taken 1 minute and 45 sec. to load Ani
Pro, even with no animation in memory! (Previously about 5 sec.!). Doesn't
matter whether or not the network is running, and the situation is the same on
both machines. What on earth is going on???
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Gayle G de N, SAVANTES
Memmaker will add DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM to your config.sys and my
>guess< would be this has caused your AniPro to slow down on startup.
I know when I used QEMM with AniPro (and 3DS) it caused the application to take
loooonger to start. I never took the time to figure out why, I just stopped
using Qemm. (didn't really need it)
Now, you need EMM386 installed to facillitate many of the memory saving calls
Memmaker inserted, so you may want to consider having multiple configurations.
DOS 6 has a mult-boot feature built in now. (read the manual)

Thanks for the swift reply, Jamie. Oddly, I was running QEMM ( a really old
version), and took that off when I put DOS 6.2 on. Never had a slow load
before, (but QEMM gave me fits with several other applications).
I'm hoping that the problem is that I have v1.3, not 1.3A, and the "cure" may
be a newer cfig386.exe, rather than multiple configs.
Thanks. Gayle G de N
"I'm hoping that the problem is that I have v1.3, not 1.3A, and the "cure" may

We still use 2.2b for the CFIG386.EXE, by the way.
I noticed in our 1.3A readme.doc there is a section on the EMM386/DOS 6 combo
which states that you will probably get rid of your problems if you run
CFIG386 ANI -MAXV 0 <enter>.
The EMM386 memory manager is slower to load for DOS 6 than for DOS 5, for some
reason.
Thanks also for Jamie's comments.
Nick (and Jamie) –
Thanks for the prompt responses.
My readme.doc is for v1.3, not 1.3A, and has no such information. To
experiment, I tried typing in the line you mentioned – no apparent effect.
Suggestions? I note the cfig386 file I have is version 2.2b – is this the same
as in v1.3A of AniPro? If not, could I please get a copy of the newer cfig386
file?
Hope that will do it – I'd hate to have to resort to multiple config.sys files.

Gayle,
It does sound like you do not have 1.3a. To get it all you need to do is fill
in the BUG REPORT form in the back of your Installation guide. As the bug you
are reporting, say you want 1.3a so you can run under Windows. You will be
shipped 1.3a.

Yup. I just checked under "info", and it's plain 1.3. I just got a little
pamphlet with my upgrade; no bug report form – I assume I can use the form from
my original manuals? Why am I saying I want to run it under Windows? Shouldn't
I just tell them what the problem is and refer them to this thread?
Thanks, Gayle G de N
"I just got a little pamphlet with my upgrade; no bug report form"
Yes, use the form (photocopy) in the back of your manual. That's our bug form.
Memory management was tweaked between 1.3a and 1.3. Brian's suggestion may get
you running, as you're reporting a problem that doesn't seem to respond to our
usual "fixes". Hopefully you'll enjoy the improved fonts with 1.3a also.
Thanks, Nik, Brain, Jaime, and to all who responded. I'll send off the request
for 1.3a, and let you all know what happens.
Nik,
Thanks for the tip. I have been having this problem for some time, but never
bothered to do much about it. I tryed -maxv 0 and ANI started right up.
I hope Gayle gets her problem solved but in the meantime, thanks a million.
Fred
Delighted to have been of help! Thanks.
