Gus,
I remember your mentioning having moved near Grass Valley, CA. We've been
seeing these reports of the terrible fire that's out of control and threatening
Grass Valley; is everything O.K. for you?

We spent the day yesterday watching the fire from our back yard. Luckily, the
wind is blowing the other direction. The noise those big helicopters and
tankers make is tremendous. If nothing else, we had the weirdest sunset last
night. The entire sky was red like a ripe tomato. With all the smoke in the air
it seemed like we were in Mars or something.
I _really_ hope your house is completely out of danger, Gus. I haven't even
visited yet <bad taste g>.
All kidding aside, I hope you guys are safe up there!!!

Hope everything is OK up there. I read in the paper that they were
evacuating the Grass Valley Electronics area (would that be Grass Valley
Corp.?). Do you know if anything is happening over in North San Juan (Ananda
Institute, Malakoff Diggings, etc.)?

I have no idea what is like around Grass Valley right now. I'm several miles
south/south east of it. The big fire right next to us was mostly gone this
morning (nothing else to burn) and made its way north. It never got closer than
around 10 miles from us so it's not like we were that close to it.
We're at around 3,500 feet and looking out west I can see all the way from the
Sacramento valley up to the Sierras. There are a bunch of small fires spread
all around. It's just that the smoke gets together and if you don't look at the
ground, it seems the entire state is in smoke (ain't it!? <g>). But this is
nothing compared to the fires down south last year (at least I don't think it
is).

I'm just getting a little panicky. I've got 5 acres of 80-100 pines up
there that I'd hate to see leveled, by flame or loggers.

i didnt know u had property up there. my folks just moved to Pike. havent heard
from them so they are either all right (no danger) or the fire got the phone
lines. (dark humour, eh?)

Yes, back in my old programming days (I bought in 1982), when I was rich
<g>. When I came back to L.A., after a year of living on $300/month at Sonoma
State Univ., I wanted only a good guitar, and 10 sessions of rolfing. I came
back for what was to be a 1 month inventory consulting project @ $1500, enough
for 1 or the other. Still here. I had a student of David Russell Young Don
Musser) build me an acoustic dreadnought, since I couldn't see paying $1800 for
a Martin using damp wood and plastic edge binding. I'm extremely pleased with
the result. The property I ended up buying was next to the luthier's (5 acres,
water @ 25gpm) on Tyler Foote Crossing (San Juan Ridge). ex-Governor Moonbeam
supposedly has some property there, too. The rolfing came out of the 2nd
month's "take".

well ill be dipped! my property is 14 miles up Footes' Crossing Rd. Of course
it is easier to go thru No. San Jaun and on thru Alleghany. Only three miles of
dirt to my claim from there. Talked to my Mom last night. She said there is
nothing burning close to them in Pike, and the Rough 'n Ready Blaze is under
control now. So breath easy and visit your trees in peace.

Pretty darn close – but that puts you over the Nevada County line into
Sierra, looks like. A claim, huh? That explains your company name a bit
better. I remember the drilling guys looking for gold while putting in the
well.

Yep. they say gold is where u find it so im not surprised ur drillers were
eyeballing the well dig. I havent hit the Mother Lode yet but I do pretty
good. Average an ounce/week of small to fine gold and usually come up with a
large chunk or two. This last trip I found a four ounce quartz with gold piece.
Worth approx $2400. not bad for a days work!

'Glad to hear you're safe. I just heard the fire is mostly contained; I hope
you never have a closer experience than you've been through!
