I'm trying to find the best, or even an acceptable, combination of software and output devices for doing landscape (plan view) renderings. This would a step up from the typical renderings you see landscape architects do with color markers. I tried this briefly with my older version of Topas, which choked on a large number of polygons. I was going to go back and use QuickSurf to try to improve on the sheer number of rendered entities, but haven't gotten around to this yet. Anyone doing landscape renderings? Any tips as to preferred software and output devices/methods? Is 3DS worth a look for this application? Any and all advice would be appreciated! Richard

Dear Richard; As a Landscape Architect I.T., I have had a good run with Softdesk products and the Landscape module. It shows you 3-D and my understanding is that if it is setup properly you can simulate growth over the years. Its data base keeps tracks of common and latin names and holds a large variety of 3-D symbols. As far as plan views go, great diversity in graphic symbols and it keeps track of quantity automatically. Softdesk is an overlay of Autocad and is a breeze to install. After a month of learning you should be preety fluent in its use. Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply…I'm more interested in plan view renderings at this point, as this is 95% of the illustrations that our landscape department does for clients. I'd like to be able to color/render a large land plan, for example, and have suitable color output (I'm already investigating service bureaus for this). Richard

You can just give it a list of XYZ coordinates, tell it the size and detail of the mesh it should create, and voila! Landscape city! The Vail.3DS file on Nancy Fulton's book's CD was created this way. Jim

Hi there Jim, I have QuickSurf, but I'm faxing a request for the 3D Surf stuff. Time to make some room on the old hd… Thanks, Richard
