Can someone tell me a quick way to make a pond ripple? The ripple IPAS seems to assume that in the first frame you want the entire scene rippled. I want a single wave rippling out from the center. It should look like you just dropped a stone in the cent of your screen and a single wave (ok, two or three is acceptable) is propagating out towards the edges. Is this easy or very difficult? Doug, This may seem like common sense but before you apply ripple, copy the grid mesh and then apply ripple to only one of the grid meshs. Then you can morph from the flat grid to the rippled grid. If you need more refinement, you can morph between the two and use snapshot to create an additional morph target. If I'm missing something in your question let me know. -JE

That's a good idea, and one that I have considered, but my problem is more severe than that. I think I will go back to the animated bump map routine. I think it will be easier… – Doug Wolfgram/GRAFX, Written 17-Aug-1994 @ 11:02:48 Using: Windows NavCIS PRO 1.21

Doug, If you're willing to make your own maps, then you might conider using "displace.pxp". Its a great tool as you can interactively see how the map is deforming the mesh, and you can make several morph targets that way. Maybe a combination of the two. Anyway good luck, -JE

Because of the angle of view bump maps won't work either. I am going back to ripple. It just doesn't seem smooth. The valleys and peaks seem kinda pointed. I want a smooth ripple like the one on the WCT CD. Will displace do this easily? Does anyone have a mesh they could upload that just shows a ripple propagating out from the center? – Doug Wolfgram/GRAFX, Written 18-Aug-1994 @ 13:13:55 Using: Windows NavCIS PRO 1.21

Doug, The "valleys and peaks" are a result of not enough tesselation. ie not enough faces. Yes with Displace you can adjust the tesselation so that you do not see the polygonial edges. I think if you can create the maps easily displace will be the easiest to use as you can view it interatively. You'd probably need only a couple of maps, and with just a little experimentation you'll be done in no time. -JE

There are two good alternates. For geometry, the Schreiber folks have a much more programmable ripple.pxp. And for maps and layers, Digimation's new Mirage IXP is pretty amazing. It does killer rain. – G

Thanks Gary. I'll check into it. As I told John E., I think the animated bump map will be easier to generate for now… – Doug Wolfgram/GRAFX, Written 17-Aug-1994 @ 11:03:31 Using: Windows NavCIS PRO 1.21
