I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF YOUR COMPANY PLANS TO OFFER 3DS ON OTHER COMPUTER PLATFORMS SUCH AS: POWER MAC SGI DEC [ALPHA] FOR EXAMPLE? AND ALSO ARE YOU PLANNING TO HAVE 3DS ON UNIX? I AM JUST WONDERING IF YOU PLAN TO UTILIZE THE MUTITASKING ENVIRONMENTS. OH YA ALSO DO YOU THINK YOU MIGHT BE MAKING A JUST A RENDERING MODULE TO RUN ON OTHER COMPUTERS? THANKS VERY MUCH MARK RASMUSSEN

You'd best ask someone from Autodesk these questions. We just make this stuff. – G

Mark, << Autodesk future plans? >> Sorry. Autodesk does not discuss future product features, plans or shipdates.

I'm sure you get badgered about this alot. I got to play with ACAD-NT. pant… Surely, 3DS-NT can't be far away. I know you guys have a SG rendering engine (or was it SUN?). Why don't you pull a couple of code guru's aside and compile an NT rendering engine. Gee, What a wonderful idea. Sometimes I get the feeling ya'll just hate Windows. NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT NT /_____________From your message_____________\\ an NT rendering engine _______________________________________________ Chris, I'm with you on this one. Just the rendering engine on NT would put a whole fleet of Alpha workstations to work in my rendering farm. I'm wishing that 3DS will follow at least in part in ACAD's footsteps on this one. Bob

Personally, I don't see why not. If the engine is in C++, then port it to Visual C++. There, go through the code and make it a native windoze program. NT should handle the rest if I'm not mistaken. There be major differences, but the core of the code should basically stay the same, right?

Chris: I don't know my *ss from a C++ so what's possible for an NT render engine is a mystery to me. I've heard often enough that Pharlap is troublesome in other environments so this could be a drawback. I just wish somebody would break the code of silence about what is being developed as future purchases of hardware and software are directly influenced by what path is taken. I hate having to prognosticate, I feel like I'm playing the lottery with my business future and it makes me uneasy. Bob

Codes of silence are a good thing. The alternative is known as "vaporware", the term any computer maven or journalist uses when something has been discussed in public yet hasn't shipped. You don't want to be on the bleeding edge. Let someone else get the arrows in the back. If you can't make a living with what you have today, then tomorrow's product won't help much. Buying computer hardware and software is and always will be an expensive proposition. There's no way to eliminate that risk. (Generic Software Industry Disclaimer and Words of Wisdom, ™ ) 🙂

<< I just wish somebody would break the code of silence about what is being developed as future purchases of hardware and software are directly influenced by what path is taken. >> This is one of the main reasons why they keept such a tight lid on things, IMHO. Why buy the product now, if the version you really want is 9-12 months down the road? Wait and buy it then, and see the company's sales nosedive. Personally, I would like to know a few more details myself, but I can understand why they do what they do.
