#PAR Backup

Is there any way to backup a PAR drive using a Colorado Jumbo 250?
The drive is only recognized as network drive and will not show up in the
list of drives to back up. Can I get around this?

Hmmm…on my network the PAR drive shows up fine in the tape software, Andrew.
If you can't get it to work this way, simply copy the .ANI files over to a DOS
drive and back up from there (please excuse me if you already knew this, but it
was hard to tell from your message).
Note that I've heard of problems related to restoring directly to the PAR drive
from Colorado tape. I cannot verify this, but I wanted you to know about it the
reports.

OH NO!!
Alan, sorry for butting into this. I know you can't verify this statement but
does this go for restoring the PAR animation file to a non-PAR drive DOS?

Heavens NO! You should be able to restore to any DOS drive to your heart's
content! You MAY even be able to restore directly to the PAR drive, But I
haven't tried it yet. Just be aware there were some reported problems some time
ago.

PMJI, (as <shame> I haven't finagled a PAR out of the bosses yet), but I seem
to recall the only problem reported with restoring from Colorado tape backups
is when only a PARTIAL restore was done. Apparently, you could restore the
whole thing directly to the PAR drive, or do a partial restore to a normal
drive and then copy/move the files to the PAR via DOS.

I don't know what your computer resources are but I am able to use the DEC
ALPHA workstations as a complete disk mirror for both my PAR and my PC hard
drives. Do you guys run a PC or workstation based CAD system? Once I get my
files across to the CAD (I gotta use Pathworks) side we have a semi-automated
backup system to Exabyte tape so my files actually don't have to reside on the
workstations for more than a day. I leave 'em there as disk space on the CAD
side is abundant (25 gigs).
I have a Colorado tape drive at home and its as much fun as a sharp stick in
the eye.

PS As I figured the new BNL disk is revealing some really funny stuff with each
listen. What I think its missing musically that I liked on 'Gordon' is lotsa'
percussion emphasis and some horns.

Um, are you saying they are no good??? But then again you are used to an
Exabyte.

There is nothing functionally wrong with my tape backup drive at home. What I
dislike about it is its lack of speed and lack of capacity. My disk drive
takes 4 tapes to back up and that simply means I have to babysit the damn thing
when I do a complete backup. The Exabyte drive at the office has spoiled me.
🙁 I tend to do incremental backups and run 'em at night to alleviate the
hassles.

We're running AutoCAD on a Novell 3.12 network (486 EISA server, UTP Ethernet,
486/Pentium CAD stations). We've got an Exabyte 8505 tape backup on the
server, but have client-ware that will allow workstation backups too. I just
got a firmware upgrade on the Exabyte that will (I hope) take care of a few
glitches we've been having. The speed/capacity of the Exabyte is really
terrific!
We have some QIC-80 drives that we use to send large sets of drawings (ie too
much hassle for floppy) to consultants, etc (never so much as to fill up a
whole 120mb tape, so the speed for that ain't TOO bad — for whole HD backup
though, I'd have to agree w/ the stick-in-the-eye assessment).

What I think I remember, Dave, is any restore trashed the rest of the drive.
I'm not real sure, but I'm not gonna test it until I've backed up the entire
PAR drive!

Okay, maybe that's what I was thinking — that unless you started with a clean
drive when you restored, the whole thing would be trashed.

what was definitely reported…

I use the Colorado to back up and restore to PAR all the time. Just make sure
that you set the PAR to output .ani files not .tga. That is in the
"preferences menu."
My biggest complaint is that the 250 is just way too small and way too slow.
OH, one more thing; be sure to optimize your PAR drive before attempting to
backup or restore. Good Luck.
