Amiga Unix [D???? I need to know what to get and where To run on A4000 030 /
040
Advice and comments please
Commodore doesn't sell UNIX anymore.
There is a project to get LINUX to run on the Amiga, and I think it's met
with some success. I haven't run it on my system yet, so I don't know the
details.

What I hear is that you are likely to have better luck with NetBSD than
with Linux. Either way, though, you still need to be very familiar with
Unix.

I do UNIX OS development (security, these days), so I'm pretty familiar
with UNIX. 🙂
I'll have to look into NetBSD. Thanks for the tip. The big question for
me is whether or not it would run with this GVP 030 card I have.
I've had great luck with Linux on the PC. I once swore up and down I'd
never get UNIX on a PC, but Linux made me a believer. It's a shame the
Linux port to the Amiga might not be up to snuff.

I hear nothing but good things about Linux. There's a very smart guy in the 3D
Studio forum who says his heavily loaded (NFS, news, etc.) Linux box runs for
weeks and weeks while his Suns still reboot every day or two.
I think my longest run on Linux lasted about 60 days. I had to bring it
down when the power went out and the UPS it was connected to showed less
than 1 minute of power remaining. 🙂
I have Linux running on a 4000/040 here. It's usable, but there is still a
lot of work to be done. Most facilities are there in a rudimentary form, it's
just a case of going through and speeding things up/expanding to full spec,
etc.

Where did you get Linux from? I thought it didn't support the 68040 yet, is
there a new versio out that does? Thanks in advance.

Hi John,
Linux doesn't support the Motorola processors … yet. There is a project
under way to port it. I have the current working version as part of the porting
project. The system is up and running on any MMU-equipped Amiga in a usable
form, although it is not yet release quality. There is no documentation yet, so
if you want to install it, you're pretty much on your own.
I started looking into it all when news of CBMs troubles broke. I didn't
want to be stuck with obsolete kit, but obviously would rather eat razor blades
than buy a PC. The best option was to keep the hardware, but get hold of a
portable OS that made it fairly irrelevent what kit it was running on. Linux
seemed a good choice. It's quite interesting looking at kernel source. Hell of
a way to learn UNIX!

BTW, do you know how many Int*l processors you need to perform a shift
operation on a long?
33: 1 to do the shift and 32 to hold the bits. 🙂

I used to hear stories of how Amigos used to set up their 500's as smart
terminals on unix systems, and this got me thinking…. I have just downloaded
Linux (Dare I say it ..for my PC) and I've been wondering if it is possible to
connect up my Amiga 500 as an Xwindows terminal via RS232?
Has this ever been done? If so how? Or where do I start? Thanks in advance

As a text terminal, I think it's quite easy. You just need the extra serial
port on the PC set up as a login port. (I'm sure Steve Pietrowicz can give the
details.)
If you mean running the A500 as an X terminal, that's possible, too, except
it'll cost money (to buy the X for the Amiga from GfxBase) and it's not going
to have much "oomph". Without hard disk, it's going to be tough. How many
fonts did you want, one or two? 🙂
The text terminal part is easy. Just connect a serial line from the Amiga
to the PC, and be sure there is a getty running on the PC's line.
There's a PD version of X (it's available in AmigaUser), but I have no
experience with it. As you said, without a hard disk, it'd be tough.

There is apparently X-Windows terminal software out for the Amiga. I've
never seen it, but I think it is/was written by Dale Luck's GfxBase (?). I
don't know if it works through RS232 or not.

You might try CEI. I recently got it from a local dealer, and am running
it on an A3000. Don't know if it will work on an A4000 though.
