My version numbers are Kickstart 40.63, Workbench 40.42.

hmmmm…mine (recieved from Expert Systems late last week) is KS 40.63 &
WB 40.42. I wonder what the differences may be. Dale?

Frankly, I don't know exactly what the release version of 3.1 should be.
I do know that it should be the same for all machines, and it sounds like
it is not. Commodore Germany may not have coordinated well with West
Chester (or even talked to them) about a version for release, but just
took the most recent ones they'd been given for testing and released
those. Usually, all releases are made official by West Chester, but,
obviously, the situation is not normal.
All the version numbers I've read in this forum (at least half a dozen in
the last 24-hours) are within a couple of each other and of what I am
running (but which version numbers might be covered by NDA). That
probably means a very minor bug fix or two difference between these
versions.

The KS version depends on what computer you have and if it has PCMIA (or
whatever that thing is called) support or not. On my computers (4000 and
3000) I'm using …

Kickstart 40.70, Workbench 40.42
But, they're softkicked, not ROM. I don't know this to be fact, but I've
been told that the highest numbered version of the 3.1 ROM being sold is
40.68.

thanks for your clarification. Just one question: does the softkicked KS
work bugfree on the A4000? If yes I'm interested to buy only the workbench
without ROM's. Why?… well, my system is running very well under 3.0,
EGS-Spectrum,Emplant,SCSI-Controller, 2 internal floppy drives and one
internal CD-ROM and I'm really afraid to open this cheesebox now to
install the ROM's and then….. have a big (bad) surprise 😉

Unless you are a registered developer you cannot (legally) obtain the
softkicked OS. I personally would not have the ROMs in my machines.
The ROMs I received from Expert Systems report:
WB 40.42
KS 40.70
This is on a 4000.

Is that what version reports or is that what is labeled on the box? I've
spoken with a bunch of folks who got the 4000 ROMs and said the 40.70 was
listed on the box but the ROMs were actually 40.68.
Both c:version from a shell and about from the Workbench report 40.70.

I'm using a B2000 and the ROM and WB I received from Expert Systems is
different than yours.
Kickstart version 40.63
Workbench version 40.42
Taken from the About… in the WB menu and the version command in Shell.
My 2000 boots just fine, aside from a dark screen until the Shell appears.
However I get a funny coloured pointer and busy clock (colors don't match
palette choices) in screens like AutoPilot. The shadow on the right side
of the pointer is a sickly lime green as is the busy pointer clock.

You're getting funny colors because you are using the old 2.0 iprefs
stuff. Go thru all of the prefs drawer, set what you want, save, then
reboot.

I've got the same level of 3.1 from Expert Services as you do on my A2000.
Regarding the ugly mouse pointer…I'd load up 'Pointer' and it would have
the right colors so I'd save them, but when I'd re-boot, I'd have the ugly
pointer back. Probably saving prefs in the wrong spot or something.
If you are using MagicWB, like I am, you may need to re-install it. That's
what I did. I'm sure 3.1 messed with the palette somehow, but…
Re-installing MWB cleared up the odd colored pointer for me, so that's
good enough for me, for now. I hope it something simple for you!

The 16 bit ROM in my 2000 shows 40.63, the (presumably) 32 bit ROMs in my 3000
show 40.68. I believe the 4000 ROMs to be different again.
