Anybody got any ideas on how to do topography. We are workin on a
model of downtown Atlanta and need to have some rudimentary
topography. Right now I was working with Easysurf in ACAD12 and
importing into 3DStudio. This is a nice program (Easysurf) but not
great for complicated areas. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Definitely get Quicksurf from Schreiber Instruments. You could
probably get more info about it in the ACAD forum (GO ACAD), but it's
an excellent surfacing tool that works inside of AutoCad. A friend
and I did an animation that included topography by Quicksurf, and we
had to tone down the detail level just to get it manageable in 3DS.
Too many polygons to start with. I think it started out as + or – 5
feet, and ended up as + or – 50 feet, still extremely detailed
considering it was a mountainous region.
John's suggestion is a good one. Quicksurf works decently with 3DS but it does
take some trial and error to develop a workable technique with it.

Since you have both 3DS and ACAD, the solution we carry is from Schrieber
Instruments.
QuickSurf runs within ACAD and is a full service TOPO program … top of the
line .. works great.
3D Surf is it's little cousin which run inside 3D Studio. This program
probably will not have the features you are looking for.
Schrieber Instruments sells direct as well as thru a network of authorized
dealers (which we are).

I built the terrain model that john tissavary is talking about (I'm the
friend). Though I had an exelent data set to start with that time, I wouldn't
surf anything without QuickSurf. It
may have a slightly steeper learning curve than others, it more than pays off
in control and speed.
