#ROM 3.1 updates

I have a GForce 030 accelerator (25MHZ) with MMU, FPU, 9 Meg of memory,
and a harddrive installed on an Amiga 2000HD.
Are there ROM updates for 3.1? Jim Belant 72711,755 sent me the
following message:

They are supposedly available, but GVP has not yet received any such kits to
test in any Amiga. Until we do, we can only say that we expect all of our
hardware products to be compatible.

From whom do you expect to receive those ROMs? Expert Services is
selling the 3.1 ROMs. I understand that they will offer them through
dealers eventually. If GVP waits to receive ROMs, an update may not
be possible until quite late in the year.
I'm slow, but I think I can get my 3.1 ROMs installed before
Halloween.

Expert Services is the only source that we are aware of. I asked my
superiors in my company to order some, and it's just a matter of waiting for
the wheels of bureaucracy to get spinning…

Apparently so for the present, my dealer must have been talking to
someone who was speculating on future arrangements.
I guess I'll just have to try it and find out. I was dreading the
chore of opening the system or even just moving it to my dealer. I guess
I'll have to wait until the Red Queen (the one in Alice_in_Wonderland) or
her cohort Murphy is looking the other way!

I solved my problem. My system is a GVP combo 030 accelerator (28MHz;
oops, how did that get in there? 🙂 ) w/o MMU and 9 meg of 32 bit RAM. I
am using the onboard SCSI controller.
I am using a 213 Meg Maxtor hard drive, which was shipped with a #6
SCSI address. It worked fine under 2.04 using address 6, but wouldn't
boot using 3.1. I removed the address jumper blocks to set it to 0,
and the drive would then boot. However, it doesn't cold boot anymore,
I have to give it the three finger salute. But its better than not
booting at all.

In that case I may not have a problem. I'm still booting off my A2091
controller that came with the Amiga 2000HD. I left it that way to be able
to boot off the harddrive if, for some reason, I wanted to use the GVP
utility to reboot into just the 68000 mode.
Oddly, I still have to leave the GVP ROM enabled, or the drive attached
to the accelerator can't be seen. So the A2091 drive and accelerator have
a priority contention until the A2091 supersedes the drive attached to the
accelerator. (Now booting into 68000 mode WOULD make the accelerator
drive unavailable since the GForce 030 would be inactive.)
I also mapped the accelerator memory into extended by pulling the
jumper off the GForce accelerator to avoid conflict with my 386
bridgeboard.
Mr. Belant,
There is a jumper on the Maxtor drive to control how it spins up. Change
this jumper and that will fix the cold-boot problem. If that drive is the
7213 model, the jumper is J302.

I have been having problems sometime now with cold boot-ups. Both
on a Maxtor 7213SR and an older Quantum 105.
On the Maxtor – I don't see a J302 jumper.. I have a J305 thru 309
bank none of which have jumpers. Do you know if any of these might
control spin up?
Also is there any special settings on the Series II (0 ram) controller
or for the HD's themselves which should be made for proper external SCSI
hookup. I have tried both the Maxtor and the Quantum on the external and
neither will be recognize by the controller. Do the addrresses need to be
set higher than the drive (Conner 525) which is on the card? When moved
back inside everything is OK.

I saw only your mail an the subject. I want to buy a new 3.1 ROM for
my A2000. Perhabs is there any problem with a G-Force?
Hi Andreas,
when you upgrade a A2000 to 3.1 and you have a G-Force040 there is only
one problem. After the 3.1 install you must exchange the 68040.library
from the 3.1-Kit with the 68040.library from the GVP-Installdisk. The
3.1-68040.library works not properly with the GForce040.
Otherwise there are no problems with the 3.1 Upgrade. It runs best in my
A2000 two months ago.

I had trouble with the latest 68040.library from GVP with my GForce '040
under 2.1. I found the 'fix' involved moving the GVPCpuCtrl Fastrom
MoveSSP and Arp040fix statements to fall before the setpatch in the
startup-sequence. The top of my startup-sequence now looks like:

Hello Wayne, yes this is right. When I start the GVPCpuCtrl before
SetPatch it works fine. Why do you use the cpu command before and
after the GVPCpuCtrl call ? It works here without this.

I have no compatibility problems with my G-Force '030 and system 3.1. I
had to set my hard drive's SCSI address to 0, and remove the jumper
controlling the drive's power-up option. The system works perfectly now.
