#Stars3
9 messages in this thread
Hi there!!!
Can someone explain how I can obtain a more realistic space in 3ds. I use
Stars3 and no matter what I do with the parameters it still does not look as
good as other softwares. Spaceship is coming out of the spacestation and chases
another. It really needs to look like what you see in Babylon5 type of
animation. My problem is the distant stars. Thanks.
Kouros.
I don't watch that show, so what *exactly* is the problem, or the specific look
you're after ? Have you tried creating a starfield with objects, using Glow &
Highlight, etc. ?

Thanks for the reply.
What I'm really looking for is a lot of stars. I can obtain this by increasing
the FOV, but I really don't want do change the camera. So I increased the # of
stars. That did not make a difference. Plus the stars were mostly too big or
too small.
Kouros:
Try using a space photo background (NASA has some really good PD stuff
available for this) and a few layers of starfield with different parameters for
a really striking effect. Highlight, Glow, etc. IPAS's are very helpful for a
good 'space' look. Does the background need to be moving or still?

I hope y'all don't mind me jumping into the thread? How to accomplish
realistic starfields has been on my mind lately as well.

How, exactly, would you accomplish that? I am in the initial storyboard stage
of an animation that will contains scenes in space. One, in particular, will
have the camera inside the cockpit of a small spacecraft looking out while the
craft is performing 'dog-fight' maneuvers. How would you get the layered
starfield to move realistically in relation to the 'wild' motions of the
spacecraft?

For this effect, I'd just create the background and render that alone. Then
map is to a plane/sphere/whatever in front of the spaceship so that the ship
can rotate without the background doing so.

Cool !!! Thanks. Don't know why I didn't think of that. I guess sometimes we
like to make things more complicated than they really need to be.
Thanks

Anytime!

You might also be interested to check out Clouds.zip in the library. It's not
a space backdrop but it does create a "sky" to fly around in and may be useful
to check out for ideas. Just a thought.
