#PAR CORRUPTED "FLASHES"

I have a replacement Micropolis 2217A drive that does not get hot, but I just
encountered one corrupted frame. It can be viewed in stop-motion and it's
corrupted. I've been wrestling with this problem since February (?). Damn, I'm
getting tired of it!
I tried to help someone earlier by mentioning a "hot drive" problem, but I
have a dedicated fan blowing on the new drive, and I felt the drive when
joining files or optimizing to see if it got hot. It DIDN'T!
I wish to elaborate:
When the first Micropolis drive got hot, I had "flashing" corrupted frames
created whenever animations were joined or the drive was optimized. Even after
the drive cooled down and I had a fan on it, there were flakey problems from
then on.
Now I have a replacement drive. It worked fine for a few days, but I just got
a corrupted frame that looks just like the old problem. It sure seems like a
drive problem rather than a PAR problem.
I split out the bad frame – it's about a 98k file. If anyone has any
connections at DPS or Micropolis, I'll be VERY HAPPY to provide the
aforementioned file! There's a problem somewhere! I don't think I'm the only
one to experience this!

I just replied to another message you posted about your 2217A. It is
disturbing to hear that your new drive has problems too. My replacement drive
will be here Monday, and I REALLY hope I do not have to repeat this effort.
I would also like any further insight into problems/solutions with the 2217A.

PS: I have thought about mounting my 2217A externally and then soldering a
teflon skillet to it so I can cook dinner while I send files to the PAR, but
the steam would fog up my monitor, so that won't work either. 😉

Take a look at whether or not you might be having some fluctuation in your
power (as in wall plug). If you're not using a UPS or a good line conditioner
we've found that the PAR/Micropolis combination seems to be the first thing in
a system to "twitch".

Absolutely. I'd even suspect the power supply as a potential source of
problem. First, Ed should try using a different power connector from the PS to
the drive. Then, try replacing the PS. I've cured numerous HD problems this
way over the years, and it's MUCH cheaper and quicker than swapping drives,
with all the associated backing up, etc.

i am having a similar problem with my PAR/Mic 2217AV. i get corrupted frames
if i try to join two ani's without first optimizing the drive. this problem
started after the drive became approx. half full. it seems absurd to me that
the file could be so corrupted just by moving it around on the drive. i have
tried optimizing after i join the two files but the file is still bad. it
seems the only solution is to optimize the drive before each join or creation
of an ani.
p.s. i heard something about a new par driver due out by the end of the month?
does anyone know about this?
I am using a UPS. Long ago I solved a ground loop problem that caused the
drive to spin down, and I can understand the power supply deal.
I called DPS and they said JDR Microdevices has a fan that can be installed
in a drive bay. I will be calling them soon (so I will be able to actually put
the cover on my computer!?).
Once again, this new drive has not gotten hot (because I have a fan on it),
but I have had one corrupted frame, and have it separated out as an ANI file in
case anyone wants to investigate this problem…
