Do dissolves work? – I have tried doing the dissolve example shown in the help
file twice and I am unable to paste one segment over another to create the
dissolve – it just pastes in front of the segment already there increasing the
length of the sequence. Am I being stupid or does it just not work..

If you've been watching this forum its probably the latter. The product has
more holes and bugs than Swiss cheese.

You'll find that the dissolve works very well if you take time to learn the
product.
It's pretty sophisticated and ambitious software after all.
Unfortunately, you have hit upon my least favorite menu and I know exactly
which step that is tripping you up:
You were pasting the frame, not the selection.
If you want to copy multiple frames, turn on the Time button. Make sure one of
the marquee tools is active, then choose Edit/Copy Selection.
(If the other "draw" tools are active, the menu reads Edit/Copy Frame and
Edit/Paste Frame, which is what I believe you were doing.)
Next, activate the other animation and choose Edit/Paste Selection. It will
work fine now.
BTW we will change the feature to a flyoff choice in R2.

Sorry but what you are saying does not happen –
I have my selection in the clipboard because it pastes into the second clip as
10 frames but I never have an EDIT / PASTE SELECTION menu option whatever tool
is or if I am in Time or Frame mode
