#A4091 Controller
21 messages in this thread
I am thinking of purchasing a A4091 SCSI II controller from C=, this way
they will replace my 4000/040's motherboard for free. Does anyone have
experience with this controller. Is it any good?

James,
You can't buy a 4091 from C=. They "gave up" <-(MHO) and out-sourced
the 4091 to DKB. They were going to get it working right (If anyone can
they can!) and re-release it. But I have not heard anything yet about a
"4091 The Next Generation" :).

I saw an ad in the Feb. AmigaWorld, Creative Computers has the DKB 4091
with a 128 meg. expansion board (daughter board?) for $549. Should I get
it?

James,
That sounds interesting, but I think I'll wait until I get a report
from someone who has one.
Wait! Err, yeah that's it. Yeah you should get it and report back to us
on how well it works. Yeah, yeah, that's it! 😉

Reading the other replies, if C= makes good on my motherboard with
purchase of DKB's 4091, I'll get it. I'm waiting to hear from my dealer to
see if C= will do it.

I'm sure C= will make good on a new MB for those who puchase a 4091 since
they have publicly stated they would, and DKB has always released only the
finast best engineered product. Do report back to us on how you make out.

I'm swapping my A4091 for the DKB versiom (I got stuck with a dead board).
They guys at DKB seem really on the ball & give great support. They said
they have completely redone 4091 & would even fix my external box with
SCSI drives if I sent it in. The price for the 2 DKB boards is much the
same as Fastlane which has expansion on it.

DKB is one of the best – possibly THE best – hardware companies producing
products for the Amiga. Period.

Your's is the third message I had gottem fron people I respect a lot who
have said the same thing. I told Jerry at DKB how well thought of they
are. Ihat said, I guess my pocketbook will suffer! They make a lot of nice
goodies I want.

They do indeed. They make one *I* want, too (memory for my 4000) but
unfortunately, I hve an early a4000 which will not work with the card
without a new buster AND a new CPU board. :^(
We've got, oh, 10, 11 Megachips at the company – can't LIVE without those
things. :^)

You read my mind. MORE memory!

I was just told by Commodore that the MOTHERBOARD swap is FREE is you
purchased a 4091 HD controller. You just have to show proof of purchase.

But I don't have a 4091; for that matter, I don't WANT one. I hve only one
free slot, and memory is what I intend to put in there, nothing else. I'm
perfectly happy with the IDE drive and interface.
But I've got a 386 bridge, a VGA card, and a network card in there which
are NOT coming out for no blinking SCSI controller.
Memory I need though – It's maxed out at the 18 megs and I'm doing work
that needs considerably more (real time traversal of 3-d cat scan data at
any angle). But I can't, without the MB fix.

Ben:
I will second that. I also DO NOT have a 4091. The new GVP 040 board if
reasonable will be my choice. Takes no slots and provides SCSI 2.

Hope that GVP board really does work well, given the various incarnations of
A4000s out there. Might try it myself if reasonably priced and if it really
gives much speed improvement.
"I also DO NOT have a 4091."
I take it that you also have an A4000 with a defective motherboard
hat Commodore won't fix?
Thanks for the reply. DKB is taking a C= 4091 in exchange for theirs?

Yes, in a sense. To fix things on the board $125, for a complete swap
(new board) $225 which gives you their card, warenty & tech support,
all of which, as everyone on this forum, has agreed is superior. Call
them 313-960-8750 sales or 51 tech support. Very nice people, very
helpful.
Thanks for the number. I am searching for the best price on the
controller board. I am lucky enough to have a dealer that doesn't
mind if I shop for the best price. If he can't match it, we still
remain friends evev if I purchase it at another place, mainly mail
order. He said, bring him a receipt for a 4091 (even DKB's) and he
will replace my motherboard for free. Jim R. Ollick Using AP from

You can't get the 4091 from CBM anymore, but it is now being manufactured
by DKB, so I don't know if they have a way of getting you a new
motherboard and revision -11 Buster. From what I've heard, DKB has cleaned
up the board considerably, updated the ROM and a few PAL's so it should
look a lot nicer than my CBM Spaghetti 4091, and work better as well. You
might give DKB a call and check for availability and the motherboard
situation.

Thanks, I'll give that info to my local dealer.
