Hello! just a quick question… We are going to be dropping an Architectural 3DS model into an aerial photo, and I am wondering about the issues involved with the image size. We have the photo scanned at 300dpi, and have resampled it down to a 100dpi version for aiming in 3DS. However, when I go into the camera preview IPAS routine, I see that it resized the background image. Will my camera view still be rendered at the appropriate screen position and perspectivity on my background image if the render resolution is different than the camera preview IPAS routine uses? Any comments? Thanks! -Mike.

Michael, There is a tutorial that deals specifically with match perspective and an architectual building. Page 15 – 30 in the New features book. -Brian

Brian, I know about the tutorial. Unfortunately, I do not have a ground level shot to work with… It is an aerial shot from a plane. No horizon is visible (but probably exists WAY off the top of the image). I was just looking for some tips on how to use this feature with such a circumstance. Any ideas? -Mike.

I don't have any experience with the horizon being off the field of view – but I would expect you should be able to juggle the results. As Brian stated, the tutorial is pretty definitive – unless you have an old copy of 3DS4 (pre c1 or c2). Make sure you've got the latest, or you will be missing excellent info!

Thanks. We were able to fake it, but it was not a easy experience. Unfortunately for me, we do *alot* of aerials for diagramming purposes. I think the perspective match tool is very easy to use assuming that you have a visible horizon line, and that it falls in the center of the image. I am hoping that 3DS MAX has a better way…. I could see tracing converging lines in the image to let 3DS find the Horizon itself, regardless of whether it is in the frame or not. This would be in keeping with the improved ease-of-use of the entire package (I am drooling as I type). Thanks again! -Mike.

Phil Miller (used to be in Autodesk Training; co-author of Inside 3D Studio) wrote the update to the Perspective Match tutorial. I'll forward your thread to him in case he can influence the usefulness of either the tutorial or the product.
