I just read everything here regarding the new Max features. I am exicted about it, and will be one of the first in line to upgrade. This may be premature, but, I did not see any mention about compatibility with existing .3DS and.PRJ files. I am sure that Adesk does not mean for us to re-model our entire world (I hope). Can files be shared "bi-directional" with R4? DXF? Since Max will come with its own hardware lock, will we still be able to use (legally of course) R4 on another machine? Pondering the future, Mike P.S. Nice job YG!

Hi Mike, <<.., will we still be able to use (legally of course) R4 on another machine?..>> That's the plan. Since MAX is a new way to be a productive animator and has a learning curve, we still want you to use your existing 3ds R4 tools and acquired skills in conjunction with MAX. I think that video post in MAX and R4 will be a popular tool for R4/MAX animators. It'll tie the two package tools together. jonas[adesk]

Hi Jonas, Thanks for the reply and good news to continue using R4 while learning Max. Guess its time to send my $$ to my dealer to be the first in line when released! Importing existing 3DS files is a must, and am glad to hear that its supported in Max. Mike

Mike, Import of 3DS R4 models into MAX should be fine. Export will be limited, since MAX doesn't treat objects in the same way as R4. Those migrating to MAX will still be able to use R4, although it may need to be on the same system. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
