#Network Rendering
4 messages in this thread
I try to render in a NT-Network. The server runs under NT and the
Renderstations are connected as DOS-Clients under NT. All file transfers work
fine. Evry station can read and write to the servers work directory. But only
as long as I start the slave render mashines. Big project files causes problems
very soon. The *.mcs file is written and that's all. Using very small files I'm
able to see the network rendering for a little while but after 10 or 15 frames
the mashines fall out because of a writing error. Who can help me?
Thanks, Markus (from Germany, Dortmund)

Does this mean the slave stations are also running NT, and you have started 3DS
in a DOS Shell?
Or they are using real DOS, and connecting to the NT machine in some other way.

Hy Brian!
Thank you for ansering soon. My pitiable situation is as follows: We are a
german ATC at Dortmund. We've got a network with 30 pentiums. Former we used
WfW Network. When I was rendering only one comp run under WfW. The maps and
process files all were located on that mashine. The file sharing worked well
with share.exe. Probably file sharing is my problem in the new network
configuration. We installed NT on all comps. We still need to run DOS for some
Autodesk products. Therfore we've the ability to connecting the DOS mashines
with the NT Server by loading the NT network drivers instead of the WfW drivers
as done in former days. Theress no problem copying, reading or changing files
from / to the server manualy. Small files (for example birdwalk.3ds) are also
handled while network rendering. The problem occures when using bigger files
with more maps. Then I always get a "error on writing project file", "error on
reading project file" or a "error on writing *.tga file". I already tried
changing the net comunication settings but without sucsess.
I'd be very glad if you could help me,
Thanks Markus.
Markus,
I have succesfully run 3DS R4 network rendering using an NT server as the
common location for files. I don't know what the problem could be with your
installation.
I would check into the NT network connectivity settings. For the tests that I
ran, I just set it up and it worked. I didn't have to fiddle with the NT
settings at all. Perhaps there is some type of NT optimization that you can do
to help with the massive amounts of file traffic. Sorry, I am not an expert on
NT Networking (yet) so I can't direct you to what parts of the network setup to
look for.
