#PAR overheating drive

I just aquired a PAR and a micropolis 1.6 gig drive, and am having a problem
with the drive getting a little too warm (I hope that's all the problem is). I
seem to recall this being a problem when the PAR was first introduced, and
since this is one of the first drives/hardware to be released, am assuming this
one is likely to fall prey to this problem.
I just want to know if others have experienced overheating problems with the
drive(s), and what they did to rectify the problem. Was there an external case
you could get? Run your ideas by me! Thanks!

I was able to keep my drive and board cooler by adding a second exhaust
fan (there was a pre-cut hole in the back of my midtower chassis) and adding a
third fan where the air intakes are at the front of my chassis, blowing
parallel to all of my boards.
No air is blowing directly on my PAR hard drive, but I've had no problems.
BTW, I have the Conner 1.2 GB, which runs cooler that the Micropolis drives

Yes, it would appear that mounting a fan of some nature will help the problem.
I just have to find a simple way to do it, since my tower doesn't have a place
to mount one. Right now, I have the cover off the case and a 9 inch fan
blowing directly on it, and no problems. Moving the drive away from the other
hardrives is another thing I want to do too. Thanks for everyone's input. If
anyone has any better ideas, let me know…

I used two-sided tape that had a high heat-resistance factor to mount one
of my fans to the chassis. Worked great!

The micropolis 1.6 gig drive (2217A) will run hot. My rule of thumb is if you
can leave your hand on the drive it is not too hot! Another thing to do is move
the drive away from other HD's, extra fans also work great. You talked about
problems with the drive, if your are getting corrupt data, heat can cause
problems, also earlier versions of the software caused problems so make sure
that you are using version 1.5 of the PAR software.

I have been using a 12v. 4 inch fan on both my 1G and 1.6 G. Micropolis drives.
A contact thermometer reads 94 degrees F. I suggest using a fan at all times
on these drives.

I suggest mounting the extra hard drive cooling fan in all of the PAR systems
that I sell, but for myself I have not had the heating problems most people
talk about. There are a few things that I contribute that to, first, I have a
large tower with two fans, I have two 2217A's they both have removable trays
with power switches on the front and I try to turn them off when there not in
use (I also have a third 2217 that I swap out which I keep animated
backgrounds, test files etc.) and last I usually keep my cover off the tower.
BTW- It was great meeting you at the Biltmore bash on Sunday night, it nice
putting names/faces together.

Mark at in:sync we keep our machines open with 2 or 3 fans blowing directly on
the drives. I have heard of people adding heat sinks to their drives and doing
all sorts of other interesting things (Haven't heard of anyone watercooling
them yet though 🙂 )

The water was tough on the drives when there was a leak, so we went to
LN2(Liquid Nitrogen), or CO2(Carbon Dioxide). Directly from liquid or solid to
gas. No mus, no fuss. <G> And at -400 degrees, it keeps the whole room cool.

Just kidding. I have a 4 inch fan directed at my 2217A micropolis.

I added a little 12v muffin fan (salvaged from old power supplies) for each of
my Micropolis drives. I jam the wires into the 12v pins of one of the spare
drive power cables and aim the fan directly at the drive. The drives go from
frying-pan hot to near-ambient.
