#Video Card – What to Buy

I currently have a 486/100 mhz with 64mb ram and a 2 gig hd. I am looking to
buy a new video card for my system, but I do not want to spend big bucks
because I really need to buy a system to run MAX. I would like to be able to
run 3DS at 800×600 @ 65K colors minimum. If anyone knows of a good solid card
to accomplish this please let me know. I do not want to spend more than $300 on
my now antiquated system. Thanks for the help.

My suggestion to you would be to hold out until after Jan 1. I am told that
Pentium prices as well as ram are expected to drop drastically.

300.00 will get you a Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM. First I jumped from a
Speedstar Pro to a Diamond Viper. It was slower than the Speedstar, and after
many phone calls the consensus is that that card rots. So I traded for the
Video VRAM, and It's been more than adequate. Reviews indicate it's one of the
best buys for around $300.00. There's no driver in the Vibrant Config for the
Video VRAM; the Stealth 64 should be chosen

You can get a 2MB WINNER 1000AVI for about that price. It will do 16bpp at
1152×864 with a refresh rate of 85 Hz. It also does 800x600x32bpp at 85 Hz.
The board also has WinNT support directly from ELSA 🙂
What other applications do you run? AutoCAD? If you check the August
CADalyst, then you'll find a review of the WINNER 1000AVI.
