No, I'm not going bald. I was just wondering if anyone out there is working or has a hair IPAS routine. I'm not talking about that technique using scatter, but a full fledged hair routine that lets you put anything from fur to a mane on your mesh. If the Amiga has Fiber factory, 3DS must have something that does the same. – Neil 102226,3566

Neil; There was a sample at Siggraph at the Electronic Theater that showed "hair growing" on what appeared to be a doll. To my knowledge, it was not done on 3DS. However, I overheard someone say that "hair was very do-able now", "someone just needs to write the routine". I don't recall who it was that said this. That's all I know. So someone else needs to jump in here for any further details. Dennis

Thanks Dennis, I wish you could have been more specific. Ah well, it seems everyone is too lazy to make the routine. I hope someone gets around to it, it's a pretty major thing (Everyone I know has hair, in various quantities). See ya. – Neil 102226,3566

Neil; >> been more specific. Well, it was a very short piece, and as I recall, it seems that it started with a bald doll. The hair grew very quickly. It looked like what would be on a woman with hair to her shoulders, and curled in 1.5" curls. It appeared to grow on the dolls head as we watched. I cannot be more specific on who else commented on this, because I don't recall. Hope that helps some. Dennis

Thanks Dennis. Hope it's used for IPAS sometime. – Neil 102226,3566

Neil, we have an excellent hair routine at MetroLight, but it's a command line unix program at the moment. It was used for the Ju-Ju shampoo (self promo piece) that MetroLight used a 2 or 3 years ago – it caused quite a stir. Ironically, it hasn't been used since to my knowledge. I've been wanting to have our software development team beat it into shape and add a GUI but it's a low priority. If I could find a programmer who was interested in porting it to MAX it'd be fantastic. Anybody know such an individual? Martin

Martin, I do actually have a programmer who is interested, but he doesn't know how to program IPAS routines. Is there a text file or a book describing how to do it? I would love to torture him with making this program, I've been doing it for years. Any info you could give I'd love. Thanks… – Neil 102226,3566

Neil, >> program IPAS routines …. Is there a text file or a book describing how to do it? << I think it should be a MAX project and that process is probably way different from IPAS programming. I don't really have much knowledge of writing IPAS routines, but a search of the lib's might provide something useful. MAX developers are either already working or will be gearing up in a month or 2, from what I heard at Siggraph… Martin

>> It was used for the Ju-Ju shampoo (self promo piece) that MetroLight used a 2 or 3 years ago – it caused quite a stir. << What a classic piece. Still some of the best, most naturally flowing hair I have seen – looked like a clarol commercial. But then, I guess that was the point. <G> – Dan / n-Space, Inc.

Dan, >> What a classic piece. Still some of the best, most naturally flowing hair I have seen << agreed. It was a way before my time at MetroLight, but it just goes to show what idle hands can come up with <g>. 'Bout time they did something with it though. Martin

>> 'Bout time they did something with it though. << Definitely. Sure would be nice to see in MAX… hope you find that developer you are looking for. – Dan / n-Space, Inc.

Hi, Martin! >>If I could find a programmer who was interested in porting it to MAX it'd be fantastic. >>Anybody know such an individual? I know such an individual! And even more then one. And, BTW, port from Unix to MAX's dll should be extremely complicated (in the worst case scenario, routine can just be rewritten from scratch in C++, using MetroLight's algorithms). Alek, >> port from Unix to MAX's dll should be extremely complicated << yes, I didn't think it would be an easy job 🙂 It would probably be necessary to evaluate what MetroLight has before deciding if it is feasible, or not. Martin
