#Critique

For those of us who submitted animations for the demo reel, and were not
selected for inclusion, would it be possible to receive greater detail on what
about the amination keep it from being selected? I ask only because it would
be helpful for future work. I would greatly appreciate the critique.
Thank you.

sounds like a great idea! who did you submit the work too, maybe we can get
that person (or persons) to respond. this kind of feedback can be as valuable
as any seminar!

I have the name at work. It was Bill "something". In fact, based on at least
some of my activity here on this forum, he called me and asked if I wanted to
submit something.
I hate to bug him at work. I don't want to sound sour; I'm not. I just would
like more information. I had hoped that my message here would be passed on to
the appropriate folks.

I'll give you a quick rundown of what will get you disqualified:
First, competition gets very tough if a tremendous amount of material was
submitted in your category (e.g., we had a ton of entries for architectural
animation, and we only accepted 1.75 minutes of that stuff). In this case, only
the cream of the crop was selected and we rejected almost an HOUR of 'ordinary'
work.
That said, here's the basic criteria:
– uniqueness
– coolness factor. must elecit a 'cool' from the judges
– lack of rendering anomalies:
– flickering faces or shadows
– edge ropiness
– texture or bump scintillation
– map seams
– flat lighting (too much ambient)
(note that everyone ought to turn their ambient
down to zero and KEEP IT THERE)
– heavy-handedness… subtlety is very important
– lack of scene density
– flat materials… Ka(ambient) too high
– motion anomalies (in either objects or camera)
Do you have the '95 Siggraph video? If so, it ought to give you a good idea of
exactly what we look for.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.
I realize that there must have a been a zillion entries. I also realize that a
detailed critique would greatly extend the amount of time it presently takes to
put together the demo reel. However, just to receive a form letter doesn't
balance out.
One suggestion is to use a form much like your reply to me, but with check
boxes. If one of the areas that you listed for example is where the submission
falls short, you could send that back along with the form letter.
To know that a submission was not used because there was too much
scintilization and the lighting was too flat would be of great value to the
submittor!
Thanks again.
I completely agree with you. Unfortunately, the amount of extra work it would
take, considering the over FOUR HOURS of submissions we had to look through
this year, would've doubled the time required to get through that (very
arduous) process.
Looking at what we _did_ accept on this year's video is the best way to see
exactly what we were looking for… because that's what we chose!

I understand how difficult the task must have been.
I still beleive that a quick and dirty critique, and I mean really quick and
dirty, is deserved given the amount of time that submittor spend on these.
There. I have officially made my statement on this!
Thanks,
Chris
Understood… Like I said, I completely agree with you.
