#Can't Print on A1000
4 messages in this thread
I'm a PC guy and my sister just got a Amiga 1000. It doesn't print correctly,
it leaves off letters, and the formatting is all over the page. I don't know
anything about Amigas but since I'm the family computer guy, I've been asked to
find out what's wrong. The OS is version 1.3, the printer is an Epson FX 85. We
don't know how much RAM. She doesn't think it has a hard drive. I haven't even
seen the machine (she lives in another city). A friend of hers told her she may
need to "Create a new Desktop"? Does that sound right? How do you do that?
Any help would be wonderful.
Thanks in advance.

Mike, your sister's Amiga 1000 is the Amiga that came out in 1985. If it is
just the basic machine, it probably does not have a hard drive, and may have
only one 880K floppy. It probably has at least 512K RAM, but won't have more
than that unless there is a hardware add-on on the side. Newer Amigas, of
course, are much better equipped.
The printer is probably not working properly because she does not have the
right printer driver. She should look in her Preferences (an icon on the
Workbench) to see which driver is selected. If it is not an Epson printer, she
should change it – and you can probably find the exact driver she needs in our
library of printer drivers in AmigaUser Forum.
Your sister can learn a bit about her machine by typing AVAIL at a cli prompt.
It will tell her how much chip ram, and how much fast ram she has. Typing INFO
will tell her about the drives attached to the machine.

I don't think the Amiga 1000 parallel port is a standard IBM PC port. The
pinouts are different, whereas the 2000 has a standard IBM PC port. I don't
think a PC cable will work on the 1000, where it will work on the 2000.
Tell her to check and make sure she has the proper Printer Driver for her Epson
FX selected in her WB prefs.
