Key 3.1 advantages over 1.x and in some cases 2.x: CD-ROM support including CDXL CrossDOS built in Quicker on ECS graphics refreshes More bulletproof than earlier OS revisions Multiview/AmigaGuide support Datatypes support (GIF, JPEG, PCX, WAV, etc.) AppIcon support Pen sharing Improved handling in ASL, shell, etc. And you're wrong that your Amiga 2000 "can't do any more colors." With 3.1 and the Picasso board, you can have a high-color Workbench simulating AGA or better. Try 1600×1200 Workbench displays in 256 colors! More important, late-revision Amiga software now needs at least WB 2.x to run properly and in some cases 3.x. I'm running AVI videos of "Babylon 5" on my 3.1-equipped A2000 using XANIM6, which pretty much demands WB 3.x, for instance. — from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, via Amiga AUTOPILOT v1.80 [the only way to fly cyberspace]

Lepido, in answer to your question: >on xanim 6…how do you get it to open a window on workbench…i WanT your >COMMAND LINE….cause i barely get it to work….I have a 1200… You must use following variable. Type in the Shell: setenv X11/usepub Workbench But you will see the disadvantage that the WB colors changes. Very ugly. To correct my former message: Now, Xanim8 is out … and this version avoid the color crash :-). Juan ** Nous laisserons ce monde-ci aussi sot et aussi mechant que nous l'avons trouve en y arrivant ** VOLTAIRE

XANIM doesn't open a window on the Workbench; it opens a separate screen. I suppose you could use another utility to try and force a window. I had to play with the switches to get playback on my ECS machine; haven't tried to run it on the A1200. — from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, via Amiga AUTOPILOT v1.80 [the only way to fly cyberspace]

To force Xanim into a worikbench screen type the following: setenv xanim X11/usepub Workbench : Do this prior to running xanim. (This is for xanim8 – xanim 6 I couldn't say) Hope this helps. PKB

If I put 3.1 and a Picasso board in my A3000T, could I then run AGA only software? Like games that say enhanced for 1200 aga? Steve Thompson —> AutoPilot 1.80

one can enver run disk based aga games because they always look at for the lisa chip and write to copper tables etc…

Steve, <If I put 3.1 and a Picasso board in my A3000T, could I then run AGA only software? Like games that say enhanced for 1200 aga?> No, unfortunately. Most games (AGA) write to the chipset as do some graphics programs written for AGA (DPaint AGA and Brilliance). But you will be able to run your workbench in 256 colors, and use other more system friendly programs (Final Writer, Prowrite, ImageFX, DirOpus, AutoPilot, Terminus, etc.) in those modes. I've got a Picasso in my A2000/040 so if you have any other questions I'll try to answer them. Skimming through the Redwoods on AutoPilot Asha

Lepido, <also personal paint 6.1 /6.3 supports the ppiccasso in aga modes> Thanks… I've heard some good things about Personal Paint. I may add it to my paint program collection. Skimming through the Redwoods on AutoPilot Asha

I don't *have* a Picasso but my guess is games are the one area that generally won't work with such a board as they often address the Amiga hardware directly. However, Picasso will run numerous AGA-compliant programs like ProPage, Pagestream, etc. in 256 color screen modes even on ECS machines. — from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, via Amiga AUTOPILOT v1.80 [the only way to fly cyberspace]

Ron: I was very glad to hear that someone got Xanim to work. I currently have Amigados v 2.04x and I set switches for about four hours without ever getting anything useful out of Xanim.I am awaiting system 3.1 (tomorrow, I think) and I'm looking forward to playing some quicktime movies. Have you had any trouble playing movies? What kind of system are you using? (I fear my 25 Mhz '030 won't be fast enough. –would be cruising on Autopilot if I could persuade it to download the $#@%$# messages! Instead using CIM.

Paul, I have a 25 MHz '030 accelerator on my A2000 with ECS and it played the animations with sound reasonably well…a bit haltingly, but that's even true on many Macs and PCs. — from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, via Amiga AUTOPILOT v1.80 [the only way to fly cyberspace]

That's really interesting, since I also have a 25 Mhz 030 in my A2000 and in Xanim, the fastest mode I have been able to do is to open a 256 color workbench on an EGS screen and play the anim there. But it's still ridiculously slow until the soundtrack cycles through, and then it displays the anim reasonably well. But there is a lot about Xanim that I haven't been able to find out. The docs say it has a truecolor mode, and I think that would be faster, but I haven't been able to make Xanim enter a truecolor mode, even thgough I give it a 24-bit screen. I would give a whole bunch for a utility that would take quicktime (mostly MPeg I think) and convert it to an amiga anim. My machine has no problem playing those at reasonable speeds. Oh well . . .

Thanks for the tip. I'll look for those files. Of course, this means now I have to try and make Amosaic work :-Z (that is biting lower lip).
#47603From: Phillip WoollerJul 17, 1995 7:09 AM
Don't do it!!!!! don't try and use AMOSAIC!!! 😉 I upgraded to 1.4 beta (also called 2.0 beta), and lost ftp access in the process. Also it says in the docs you can set the variable NNTPSERVER to a news server and download news. I can't get it to work though…. It's a pity we haven't got netscape 🙁 Phill

Actually, I'm thinking of bypassing the acid indigestion portion of Internet access and just buying one of the commercial all-in-one products for the Mac. Emplant's got to be good for something! PKB

*sniff* I don't have emplant so I am stuck with amosaic 🙁 Phill
#47610From: Paul BishopJul 18, 1995 12:48 PM
There, there. I went through enough grief trying to get Emplant to work (it still crashes every time I try to print to my Laswerwriter). I don't think I have the strength to go through it again with Amosaic. (g) PKB

I thought I'd do the prudent thing and browse the Mac forums to find a Web browser that is relatively trouble free. ' PKB
