What options for Unix are there for the Amiga besides Amiga Unix? I've seen
references to NetBsd and something else, but I don't know what they are. Can
someone help me out? I'd like to get UNIX for my Amiga, but since it's an
'040, that rules out Amiga Unix.

You can try NetBSD unix or Linux.
Lynux can be found in the Ineternet by going to the FTP address of:
tsx-11.mit.edu
the path is
pub/linux/680×0
now this is not for the faint if heart this will take some time to setup and
get it to work. But for the price it is great. The last version in there is
1.2
I have not install it yet myself as I am still trying to download all the
parts. THen I will need the time to confifure it (something I don't have right
now).

CEI still had them for sale – that's how I got mine. It cost about $100. But,
you must have an '030 processor, and it will only work with the SCSI controller
on an A3000 or the 2091, I think.

Amiga Unix does not run in the 040s (and must likely in the 060s) so is best to
avoid it (unless you have and 030 and plan to keep it for your Unix.
So far the choices are available through public domain.
Linux, Minix, etc…

Ok, thanks for info I have an 040 so that kinda rules that out.

there is Linux , currently version _0_.9 patchlevel 8, as Eduard Joseph
mentioned before. Anyone else mentioned Minux, an outdated didactic piece for
os builders by Andrew S Tannenbaum.

Since the system is about 50Meg , with X11 some 40 more, you should look for
the distributions on CDrom, as <meeting pearls II> and <gateway! 1>, of which
the later one is the most actual and complete one as i know. Both are available
at least here, in the old world…:-)

I beleive Linux has been updated to version 1.2 to match the PC version in both
the Amiga and Atari versions. Last time the Amiga version was supposely moving
from beta to release as soon as they had a change to put the last fixes in
(that was 2 weeks ago).
