I recently started using Amitcp 4.0 on my Dialup internet PPP account (28.8) I
got almost everything working; AMosaic2.0, NetMail, telnet, and DaFTP. However
few programs are still problems. Grapevin keeps saying that there is something
wrong with socket.config and I can not get Grn (News reader) to send mail or
post news (I use NNTP protocol for news). Can anyone help?? If you are
unfomiliar with Grn please let me know what you use (GUI news reader) I want
something that I could use with NNTP (UUCP is just too much trouble to set up)
Thanks for you responses.
Hi Gene,
>> Grapevin keeps saying that there is something wrong with socket.config<<
Did you install socket.library according to the manuel? Grapevine is written
for the As225-stack, *not* AmiTCP. The socket.library is needed to make
Grapevine (and any other As225-program) work with AmiTCP. Did you a add the
'LoadLib'-command to your startnet-script?

I have used Grn, Tin, etc… and they are not easy to set up. I can recommend
Thor to you. It has a very nice GUI, is very easy to set up, lots of handy
functions (like seperating maillist from real EMail) and you don't need the
UUCP-stuff. Everything is in one directory. If you want to try it, get Thor and
ThorTCP from Aminet (comm/mail I think).

I will get Thor and give it a try. By the way, I did not have loadlib in my
AmiTCP start up. I guess I will have to put it in there. Thanks for yor
suggestions

Gene,
Could you be more 'specific'?
>Grapevine keeps saying that there is something wrong with socket.config<
What *exactly* does the error message say? Post your ENV:socketconfig file!
Post your associated environmental variables. You might also take a look to
make sure that socket.library is placed correctly? I keep mine in AmiTCP:libs.
Also, make sure this lib gets loaded.
>I can not get Grn (News reader) to send mail or post news< Make sure the
"USER' you set in AmiTCP is the same "USER that is in ENVARC: or ENV:. Grn
doesn't send or post probably because it doen't *know* what to do because of
some missing or incorrect environmental variable.
I am not familiar with Grn…but I will look at it to see if I can help!

I finaly got if working. I put the socket lib in AmiTCP:libs and also assigned
INET: to Amitcp: I left my SOCKETCONFIG unchanged and everything started
working. Thanks for you prompt response. Oh, and I apreciate you helping me
with GRn. By the way what do you think of Thor? I got it working with AmiTCP
and it looks pretty good.

Gene,
I'm bummed because Thor will not run on my machine. Everything else in the
universe(Amiga that is) runs on my machine except THOR! I tried for days! It
would always work after a fresh install…but the next time I would try it, it
would just hang the machine. I tried everything that I was aware of, no luck.
Now for mail I use AirMail V1_1. I am setting up NNTP for news… right now I
read news with AMosaic2.0…works well..except you're ONLINE!
