#Toaster on Star Trek?
22 messages in this thread
I heard a rather interesting rumor about the Toaster showing up on another
TV show. Apparently the next episode of Star Trek TNG has a scene where
the Enterprise is going through an asteroid field. I heard that the
asteroids were done with Lightwave and one of the Essence textures.
Not sure if it's true or not, but it sure is an interesting rumor. ;^)
I didn't know there were Essence textures for Lightwave? When did they
appear?
I recall that the spfx designer or computer displays tried out the Toaster
not long after 1.0 came out, but he stayed with his Mac setup. He
apparently didn't like the idea of having to relearn everything he was
doing on another system. Besides, he sounded like a dyed-in-the-wool
Mac-ite.
I remember Todd Rungren was also said to have been grumbling about the
Toaster not being made for the Mac. I haven't heard complaints from him
lately though. *B^)

The 'Microserfs' issue of Wired has an Apple Powerbook ad with Todd
Rundgren in it.
He lists 'ToasterLink' as one of the 'things in his PowerBook'.
Just thought you'd like to know……:^)

There aren't Essence textures for LightWave yet. They'll require a new
version of LightWave that's still being worked on. (kind of like the
Screamer) Just because a product can't be bought doesn't mean you won't
see it on TV.
As for the FX designer not liking the Amiga, with the output LightWave is
capable of it's getting more and more difficult to stay a Mac fanatic.
(Or maybe they just replaced him.) ;^)

Hey Jeff!
Are you going to the Stranahan Lightwave seminar at the Bayshore next
Tuesday?
Rick – On Autopilot from Vancouver
Hi Rick,
I won't be going to the seminar myself. I'm trying to cut down on expenses
for the next little while. I realize it's considered a very good value but
I'm saving up for my own PAR and every bit helps. ;^)
Besides, a friend of mine is going. I'm sure he'll let me in on any really
cool tricks he learns.
I will be going to the Pacific Rim show at Canada Place next week though.
I can't believe Commodore's actually going to be there.
By the way, I don't recall ever mentioning where I'm from. How'd you know
I live in the Vancouver area? People been talking about me again? ;^)
Jeff,
I noticed when you posted your phone number for something or other that
the area code was 604.
As you might know, I'm lucky enough to have a PAR. I downloaded and
rendered your Outpost 7 to the PAR. Looks pretty cool.

Rick,
I'm a little glad I haven't seen that animation rendered on a PAR. I want
one bad enough as it is. I learned enough from doing the fish that I did
an improved version of the Viewpoint shark. I used the original as an
outline and modeled a new shark using splines. I may be a little too
detailed though. I haven't cut the mouth yet and it's about 12000
polygons.
A friend of mine did a submarine that looks as good as what you see on
Seaquest so we're thinking of pooling our skills and releasing a
commercial disk of underwater stuff. I'll upload a couple of images in the
next few days and you can have a look.
"pooling" your skills? Pun intended? <g>

That's right John. We really hope to make a splash with this package.
;^)
Ouch! I feel like a drip.

John, how did you guys do with the effects of the earthquake and after
shocks?
Where was the epicenter of it and where are you guys located?
The epicenter was kind of Northwest of us about 15-20 miles. We all
did pretty well. Luckily, about a month ago we cabled all of the
render farm machines to their racks and then to the ceiling girders
so our farm was protected. Other than that, just shaken up a bit. The
sets are all fine.
John,
I really enjoyed the article in January's VTU about the various
settings used in creating underwater scenes. Those same settings can
be tweaked pretty easily to create a night scene with nasty weather,
as well. Here's a question that's rarely addressed, though: Can you
offer any quick pointers concerning setting light colors,
intensities, types, etc., for realistic looking DAYTIME scenes ??
I've found this far more difficult than the darker scenes.
>We all did pretty well.
Glad to hear that.
>about a month ago we cabled all of the render farm machines
Great! How many machines do you guys have now? At last I heard there were
55, but this was before the Screamer. And how many of those do you have?
Did any of you guys personally get any bad damage?

John-
Not to be a pest, but…..
🙂
Would you be so kind as to upload some of your surfaces?
Pretty please 🙂
–Paul < Motorola Inside >
OK.
I'll bring them home from work and get them all together in one place.
Some of the surfaces will need image maps that I won't be able to upload,
but if you find any that use maps, you can E-mail me and I can tell you
what the map looks like…

I was chatting with Tod at MacWorld last week. He didn't have anything negative
to say about the Toaster. In fact, he didn't have anything to say about the
Toaster. But later that night, one was used in the concert he gave at the
Exploratorium. That guy is very *very* talented.
Yes, he's VERY talented and very conservative when it comes to the Toaster
that helped garner him more noteriety. Oh well… at least he's making
good use of it. *B^)
Did you get the NewTek T4000 tape with Todd's most recent video? It was
pretty dazzling.

I wanted to ask if you (or anyone else) knows who did the F/X for
TekWars? And on what platform?
