#3ds Special Effects book
9 messages in this thread
I was thinking of purchasing NRP's book on 3D Studio Special Effects by Jon
Bell, etal. I read that all the authors in the book are members of this forum,
and notice that they all used 3ds Rel. 3 to complete the exercises. I have Rel.
2 and was wondering if I could do the exercises in the book .
Thank you.

I don't think you'd get your money's worth if you only have r2. Some could
probably be done with r2, by using workarounds, but almost all require r3+ and
specific IPAS routines some of which only run on r3.5 or later. Might be OK as
just a reference book, but not as an exercise book.
Martin
Martin,
Thanks for the information. I might go ahead and get the book anyway. I was
interested in some of the texture maps on the cd. Which brings me to a
question. I'm in the petroleum industry and do presentations showing what the
rock looks like underground. So far, I haven't been able to find a good
collection of maps that look like underground rocks. I look in catalogs such as
Image Club but can't find that much of a varity. Turbul*.tifs look pretty good.
I was wondering if you might
know where I could find such a collection.
I would appreciate any help that you can provide.

you might call Digimation and/or 4dvision (formerly Schreiber Instruments).
They might have sources of such maps.
Martin,
I will give them a call. Thanks again for all your help.
Steve
Stepen,
If you really want some R2 books I have some old ones from before my publisher
updated to R3. The books are the 3D Studio Tips & Tricks Series. They've
changed a little since the original run but a lot of the material is there. Let
me know if you're interested.
Michele
Michele,
Yes, I'm interested, I appreciate the offer. They sound like just what I'm
looking for. Please send me more detail.
Thanks.
Steve
Stepen,
Books can be ordered from Digimation at 1-800-854-4496. They can give you the
skinny on each one.
Sorry to be so short but I am leaving for Moscow in four hours!
Michele
