#Metareyes vs Organix
11 messages in this thread
What exactly is the difference between the Digimation Metaballs and the
Schieber(4D) metaballs. BTW is Metareyes V2.0 out yet and is the Digimation
Metaballs currently available.

Organix has: envelopes to control face count over time.
allows user to define colors which represent fusion values.
works with "refraction mapping" IPAS.
will soon include "sticky mapping" making it the only
routine to hold
texture mapping in place while metablobs move and deform.
these are a few features OrganiX has which Metareyes does not.
Lee
Lee,
Yes, OrganiX does have those features over Metareyes – however you have failed
to hop on the other side of the fence and take a look at Metareyes' strong
points. such as:
1) Online documentation
2) Fast preview of yout reference spheres.
3) Clipping box option that lets you generate only certain areas in your mesh
that you want.
4) Metareys is MUCH FASTER at creating a mesh – I did some becnhmark tests on a
human head model I'm working on:
– Metareyes – time to generate the mesh at 51K polygons – 25 seconds
– OrganiX – time to create the mesh at 50K polygons – 390 seconds
5) Ability to change the fusion colors of your objects from within the
interface – no need to change the colors manually in the 3D Editor.
One thing you forgot to mention about OrganiX is that it has a really cool
option that will let you generate your mesh at any frame within the Editor.
just trying to keep things objective

You're right Kyle, I had jumped on line very quickly on Saturday and had
intended to go into Metareyes features today but now you have saved me from
that. I had never done the benchmarks as far as speed. This is very
interesting news. Aren't some of these features you mention actually Metareyes
2? Is that shipping yet? I was only going to compare OrganiX to Metareyes 1
untill I found out wether Metareyes 2 was shipping for sure.
Lee
Lee,
The clipping box option and the mesh generation speed have not changed from
v1.0 to v2.0.
Online docs, fast preview of your reference spheres and mesh are native to
v2.0. The ability to change your fusion colors is now in the same interface,
instead of through MASIGN_I.PXP.
I have been told that MetaREYES is shipping now, or very soon. (kind of
vaugely specific <g>)

MetaREYES V 2.0 will start shipping later this week.

I called Schreiber a couple of weeks ago and they said it was shipping on
Friday, Aug. 18, was there a delay or something.
Hi, Kyle!
>> however you have failed to hop on the other side of the fence and take a
look at Metareyes' >>strong points
And you didn't take into account couple of Metareyes' disadvantages, namely 4:
1. Corrida.
2. Sun.
3. Wine.
4. Girls (as you could clearly saw in Metareyes' ads).
And taking into account that Metareyes' author Javier is young and good looking
guy,
you can easily multiply some of them by factor of 2 or 3 (or even 4!).
And all that versus Danny, who lives in Toronto, where is nothing exiting –
just Alias, SoftImage and Corel.
<kidding>
Seriously:
1. speed is not a big issue – Danny's program has some room for improvement and
as I understood he is working hard on that right now.
2. online docs is not a big deal either and they just occupy so valuable for
metaballs
space and also online help is hardly in 3DS line (so far).
3. other stuff is also easily solvable (if somebody thinks it's important).
On the other hand Javier doesn't stay still and he is working out some new
surprises
for the next version.
So I would say, that competition is good for users (look what's happening with
Key Factory vs DMM), and it's Great that we have two solid Metaballs programs
instead of one.

Alex,
<<1. speed is not a big issue>>
I disagree – when 90% of what I do with metaballs is building solid mesh
objects to use with Bones Pro – then speed is a big issue, along with the
clipping box. I work very fast in 3DS and if I have to wait minutes rather
than seconds to see the results of my changes, then my thought process is shot
and I have a difficult time getting my mind in gear again.
On the whole, OrganiX and MetaREYES are AWESOME PRODUCTS. each has an option
here or there that the other doesn't. I do have to say that 'sticky mapping'
is a major feature – on ANY metaballs routine on ANY platform.
<<So I would say, that competition is good for users>>
absolutely – competition keeps Danny and Javier on their toes. Competition
makes the products better, which benifits the users directly.

Hi, Kyle!
<<1. speed is not a big issue>>
What I meant was that Danny is working hard to eliminate that difference,
so speed is not going to be an issue pretty soon.
And I agree with you on everything else 100%.

Alex,
<<What I meant was that Danny is working hard to eliminate that difference, so
speed is not going to be an issue pretty soon.>>
yep – true.
