I know this is probably a question which has been discussed over and over again, but I haven't checked this forum ina while. Why is 3ds going to be switched to Windows NT and not Windows95? I'm mostly concerned because I'm sure Photoshop and Painter and the other 2d graphic packages I use will probably be going the 95 route. Any enlightenment would be appreciated. Bruce

NT is just a more powerful OS overall. It allows access of multiple processors, open GL support, and is purely 32-bit. Jason

On the otherhand none of the installed 3ds users have a multiprocessor system, 3ds Max does not use OpenGl, and full 32-bit adds 4MB to your RAM requirement. Hardware support is horrible

Quite simply, Bruce, WinNT is an all-new fully 32-bit operating system capable of multi-threading and multi-tasking. '95 is not. The Yost Group needed to take *full* advantage of the PC platform to make MAX the best it could be, and WinNT was one of the ways to do that. PhotoShop will run fine in NT, and I'd bet Painter, if not compatible already, will be soon. I don't think you've got anything to worry about. -Alan

NT is MS's long-term target OS. Win95 is an interim solution to allow increased 32-bit development while allowing people to continue to use their older hardware and apps for a bit longer. Dave

>Why is 3ds going to be switched to Windows NT and not Windows95?< Win95 is garbage, especially after you use NT. >I'm mostly concerned because I'm sure Photoshop and Painter and the other 2d graphic packages I use will probably be going the 95 route.< I use Photoshop 3.0, Painter 3.1, Elastic Reality, and other programs under NT without any problems. I will be even better for NT that W95 is out since more 32bit apps will be developed. The W95 interface will be on NT toward the end of the year, so the only time you will need to boot MS-DOS/Win3.1/Win95 is to run stuff like games.
