Not that it comes as a surprise to us here, but:
In "Information Week", August 14, 1995, under the heading IBM's Concession, the
magazine reports IBM's admission to the failure of OS/2:
"…Lou Gerstner finally said it: The desktop operating systems war is over.
The timing is unusual. Just weeks before the launch of Microsoft Windows 95,
the chairman and CEO of IBM concedes to a group of analysts that his company
has lost the battle for the desktop and that it should refocus its efforts on
winnable wars. Early reports indicate a surprise to the IBM executives…"

Poor OS/2. I'll light a candle for it every August 24.

I read that they admitted targeting OS/2 to the masses was the big mistake, so
now they will concentrate on the power systems…
Also interesting was the report I read recently that Carl Sagan's libel suit
against Apple was thrown out. Apparently Apple had used "Carl Sagan" for an
internal code name. When Carl objected, Apple changed the code name to
"Butt-Head Astronomer". To this, Carl further objected! A judge ruled that
associating the undefined term "Butt-Head" to a scientist could not be
interpreted as a serious attack on his credibility. Such a relief to all of us
butt-head animators! <g>

It's interesting to consider that if IBM can't compete with Microsoft in the
realm of PC operating systems, then who can? DOS competitors such as Digital
Reserach will also loose significant ground in the wake of MS's Win95 strategy
to eliminate DOS. Or, as one MS executive stated, "We want Microsoft to be as
familiar as Coca-Cola."
Now just imagine what a disgruntled MS coder could do with access to almost
every personal computer in the world. Echos of "The Net". Why do you think
the movie used the name _Gate_Keeper for the antagonistic software? <g>
