This has probably been answered before, but I'm just starting out with an Amiga 500. I purchased what I assume to be the correct cable to connect the 500 to an Imagewriter II. What I need to know is how configure Preferences and/or the Imagewriter. I've tried the obvious but without luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Rich

Rich, From preferences, under the printer set-up, move the list of choices up or down to the Image writter printer driver so it's highlighted, now go back to the main screen and select CHANGE SERIAL and set the serial port parameters (baud, words size, handshake) to match those needed by the Imagewritter. Don… Thanks for the reply regarding the Imagewriter setup. I believe I followed a similar path when I first hooked it up but I'm going back and trying again. Possibly, I missed something obvious. Rich

Rich, Whoops…1 thing I forgot to mention…make sure you select SERIAL in the printer setup from preferences. That's the 2 boxes to the left of the area where you select the driver itself. Don

Don, Regarding the Imagewriter/500 setup, I've retraced my first steps and covered all the items that you suggested, but still no go. There must be something that I'm overlooking. Can you think of anything else? Hopefully, someone who has previously set up an Imagewriter on the Amiga will see this thread and add some insight. Rich

Rich, Are you getting any response out of the Imagewritter at all? Did you select SERIAL in preferences and set your serial preferences to match those of the Imagewritter? Don

Don, No I haven't been able to get any response from the Imagewriter. I have selected SERIAL in preferences and matched the settings to those of the Imagewriter, as a matter of fact I've tried just about every combination possible. I haven't got so much as a wimper out of the printer. Rich

Rich, Humm…my only other guess is the handshake lines and their settings as CTS/RTS with appropriate cable connections. Other than that…I'm at a loss. My only other suggestion would be someone here who has hooked up an Imagewritter (and I've seen messages from folks who have) or a trip to your Amiga dealer's. Don

Rich: I have an Imagewriter I hooked up, and it's very simple. If you have indeed set the serial parameters correctly, all you need is a serial cable with three wires (well, maybe 4). The thing to make sure of is that the cable is a "printer" or "null modem" cable. If you try to use a straight modem cable, it will do just what you described, "nothing". Don't worry about the exact serial word format at first, instead make sure you actually have a good connection on the vital pins (2,3,7,20), and make sure 2 & 3 are "crossed". If you're connected, even the wrong format or speed will usually give you some stray characters on the printer. Ariel (p.s. That's Imagewriter 1, not Imagewriter "I" hooked up…)

Where did you get the cable for the Imagewriter II to A500? I have an Imagewriter, but don't have it hooked up to my Amiga yet. Rodney Somerstein 73167,2165

Rodney, I got the Imagewriter II/500 cable from Redmond Cable of Redmond, WA (206) 882-2009. They are an excellent source for any type of hard to find cable. The salesperson I dealt with was named Becky. Rich

Thanks for the information about the cables. I will give them a call on Monday. Rodney Somerstein 73167,2165
