Can Deluxe Paint be used in conjunction with IconEd to make new icons? IconEd
by itself is woefully inadequate as a paint program. – John

There are a couple of PD and/or shareware programs available that will
convert a DPaint 'brush' to an Icon. One that I use frequently is called
ZapIcon. Can't recall where I picked it up — perhaps one of the early Fish
disks.

John, you can make an icon with Deluxe Paint (make sure you're in 640 x
200 mode), use only four colors (whatever color your Workbench is would
be best so you'll know how it's going to look), save it as a brush, then
use the program "Zap2Icon" to change the brush into an icon, then (if
necessary) use the program "IconType" to change the icon into whatever
type you want it to be.
Also, there is a PD version of IconEd that has a few enhancements, such
as the ability to load, work on, and save 'double image' icons, and it
also has a few drawing tools such as circle, line, rectangle, etc.

John, I'm pretty sure the CIS library would have both of them (Zap2Icon and
IconType), but I have no idea what file number. I know they are both also on
the Fred Fish disks, but don't know which one. Wait, hold it…I just checked
the CIS "Best of Amiga" booklet, and Zap2Icon is here as ZAPICN.EXE in DL9,
#24992. Does anyone out there know the file number for the IconType program?
(The one that changes the type of an icon.) –Joel
