I hope someone out there can help me! I saw in the manuals that the mouse
ports on the amiga each have two pins for an X and Y potentiometer. I am very
interested in this because on my old atari 800 I used those same pins on its
joystick connector to make a light digitizer. My only problem on the Amiga is
that for the life of me I can not find the memory locations of those ports.
None of the AmigaBasic commands allow you to use those ports as paddles like on
the atari. Can someone please tell me where I can find out what those memory
locations are!
You need the Addison-Wesley "Hardware Reference Manual"; see pages 220 ff.
"During vertical blanking, you write a value into an address called POTGO. For
a standard X-Y joystick, this value is hex 0001. Writing to this register
starts the operation of some special hardware that reads the potentiometer
values and sets the values contained in the POT registers (described below) to
zero." And so forth. I won't try to quote the whole section, but here
(without further direction) are the register values:
POTGO $034 Pot port data write and start
POT0DAT $012 Pot counter data left pair (vert, horiz)
POT1DAT $014 Pot counter data right pair (vert, horiz)
These addresses each read a pair of 8-bit pot counters.
(Four counters total.) The bit assignment for both
addresses is shown below. The counters are stopped by
signals from two controller connectors (left-right)
with two pins each.

This may be enough to get you started, at least. You do need to buy the
manual, though, for more complete information — like, how to sync with the
start of the vertical blanking interval. Much of the initial printing of the
RKM series has been snapped up by now, but persistence may pay off; available
at many bookstores and better computer stores nationwide.
