#HD BAD MAP
2 messages in this thread
I was wondering if you guys knew of a program that lets you add new
bad spots to the bad sector map after youve done all the formatting etc. My
machine has two such spots that cause the machine to reseak for a looong
time than give me a retry or cancel? Than I normaly get a guru. I don't
want to start all over again as I have a lot of stuff on the drive.
Thanks! By the way Ive been spending time on the MAUG area (a project) and
I dread it! Thank goodness there are people here who know whats going
on!!
I don't think there *is* a bad sector map. Your best bet is to copy the
bad disk to a newly formatted disk. Then you might attempt to reformat
the original disk, but in my experience, once a disk starts showing errors,
it's pretty much a goner. Perhaps the new fast file system might have some
method of ignoring bad tracks (if one sector is bad, the full track is
effectively bad, given that the Amiga reads a full track at a time…) but
I'm not sure… BTW, if you have serious trouble copying the disk (ie. one
or more files is corrupted due to the bad track…), you can use the
diskdoctor program to seek and attempt to repair (or delete) the broken
file. More often than not, deletion is needed. –>Steve Bennett
