#Amiga 500 in Sears

Well, we got our "Sears Wish Book" today. I'm sure the makers of the book
would be happy to hear that it did indeed inspire a wish – quite a strong
one. I wish the Amiga had never been placed with them.
Why? The Amiga's little showcase has (ready for some deja vu?) a screen
full of IBM text graphics – ugh! It looks _awful_ and I do mean awful. The
screen shot is even lousy, looks like the screen is warped (like the dwerp
who created he ad!). The copy that goes along with the picture indicates
the unit "multitasks", "can run 2 (!) programs at once".
Oh, my aching head. I though CBM was going to MARKET the little thing?

Ben, the point of giving the machine to major retailers was to let THEM
market it! Sears did try to sell Amigas to the government. Obviously their
regular sales force doesn't care that much.

If that was the point, Ethan, then I suggest that who ever decided on that
goal is a buffoon. Sears deserved SOME kind of help, I mean, Dealers get
all KINDS of promotional aids – video tapes, you name it. CBM should have
followed up on it.

Has anyone seen an Amiga in the Sears retail outlets? I've been to one, and
all they had were IBM clones and laptops. No sign of Commodore or Amigas.
I'm pretty sure that I saw a 500 in the Sears at Woodfield Mall in
Schaumburg, IL. If I remember correctly, it was sort of hidden in the
shadows of the PS/1 displays.
BTW, the catalog operation is a completely separate company from the retail
company. Don't ask me why, but it is. (I work at the Sears Technology
Services, the completely separate company that does the data processing for
both of the other companies.) Les Clark

I'm not positive, but I believe Sears is only going to sell 500s thru
the catalog. A few weeks ago I was hot to get an Atari Lynx. Sears only
sells them thru the catalog also. Because they didn't have them in the
store to buy _right now_, my impatience saved me the price of a handheld
game machine.

Sears Business Systems (the guys who sold to the government) is
about as different from Sears retail/catalog stores (the guys who publish
the Wish Book). as H&R Block's Income Tax Service is from CompuServe (H&R
Block owns CIS)
Same owner, totally different operation.
